Buying property in Cyprus?

Postby CBBB » Tue Mar 31, 2009 2:50 pm

Latest UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office advice.

There are risks involved with purchasing property on the island of Cyprus. Many British nationals who buy property face problems due to misleading advertising, or because they do not have title deeds, or they have purchased off plan and the property has not been completed, or their property or neighbouring properties have been constructed illegally or taxes have been charged incorrectly. The process of achieving legal redress in Cyprus can be very protracted compared to the UK. You are strongly advised to proceed with caution and to seek qualified legal advice from a source that is independent from anyone else involved in the transaction, including the seller, before purchasing property anywhere in Cyprus. You should also note that the Cyprus legal system is not the same as that in the UK.

It does go on about property in the North as well, but this is the first time I have noticed them having a go about the RoC!

Wow, this is a big turn around. I am at a loss as to what this is based on, surely good sales to Brits far outnumber the dodgy one's.
Again surely common sense should prevail when spending such large amounts of money but the above seems to be indicating something else.

For the sake of balance....

If you "buy" property with dodgy title deeds on stolen lands in the Occupied North you will have to demolish it and compensate the owner.

As both myself and Z4 said, they do go on about the occupied areas as well, but it was the first time I had seen anything detrimental about purchasing in RoC on the FCO web site.

Like any country CBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB. There are crooks, dodgey builders and cowboys! CY isn't just the only one is it.

Bulgaria is virtually owned by the mafia - so you could be renting a place from them, if you know what i mean!

Correct me if I am wrong but I have never seen this before on the FCO website. Is this new ? surely this is a huge story for the media, it must also come as a huge blow to the housing market and companies involved in selling holiday property. What's the reaction of the Cypriot Government ?

If what people are saying is true, you cannot issue deeds on a property that has not got the relevant permits to be built. More fool those who have not done their homework.

Thats is true...there are a few of those sites in Paphos I think. I friend of mine runs a small restaurant in the old town and when I told him that we have bought he was not happy as his father and him are developers too!

My first thought was no you run a restaurantd
