Pope to meet with president of Cyprus
March 26, 2009

The Embassy of Cyprus to the Holy See has announced that President Demetris Christofias will meet with Pope Benedict on March 27. President Christofias will also meet with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone and with Andrea Riccardi, founder of the Sant'Egidio Community, which is assisting the Cypriot president in his desire to reunify his nation. Cyprus has been divided since a 1974 Turkish invasion. Only 2% of the nation’s 800,000 residents are Catholic; 78% are Eastern Orthodox, while 18% are Muslim.

Apprently the President will ask for the Popes help in averting the cultural heritage destruction in the occupied part of Cyprus.

The New Byzantium 8) ... Hail Mary.

Seriously, I can't think of any better use to assign to our religious representatives than in the upkeep of our historical heritage.

Let's see if the Pope is truly cultured, to redeem himself after his African debacle .... I am prepared to forgive him!

President Christofias is certainly living up to the Global Zeitgeist of networking and making friends and alliances everywhere!

Wonderful :D

What friends and alliances has he made exactly? All i see is trip after trip to foreign countries (most of whom turkey has excellent relationships with) that seem to be of no use at all to you. Its as if your paying for him to be on holiday constantly.Second, what is he going to tell the pope that he hasnt heard before? According to this article good old paps already whinged about your 'historical heritage being destroyed' http://www.todayszaman.com/tz-web/detay ... link=38181 . Do you think now that a communist is going to meet him he will decide now is the time to take action? He could have mentioned something about it when he visited turkey, maybe next trip. OH how truly wonderful for you lot!
