OBSTACLES PREVENTING BENEFITS OF SYNERGY BETWEEN TURKEY AND EU SHOULD BE REMOVED`
Turkish President Abdullah Gul has said `obstacles preventing benefits of synergy between Turkey and the European Union, like the Cyprus issue, should be removed before wasting more time and losing more opportunities.
`Turkey and Turkish Cypriots have already done their share for a peaceful settlement of this issue. We are committed to continue in the same line`, Gul said in his closing speech at the European Business Summit in Brussels.
Our vision is to create another strong pillar of Europe in the Eastern Mediterranean among Turkey, Greece and the island of Cyprus once a comprehensive settlement has been reached` the President said.
On the global financial crisis, he said that the crisis was a testing time for Europe, adding that his country was ready to work hand in hand with the EU to overcome the crisis.
He listed economic recession, unemployment, demographic decline, illegal immigration, terrorism, energy security and climate change as major challenges facing Europe today.
He said `all of these challenges will be tackled much more effectively when the EU finally enlarges to Turkey`.
Before the summit, President Gul attended a joint press conference with the European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.
`Turkey enacted more than 30 laws despite heavy domestic politics and experienced significant reform process. Turkey has become stronger in EU process. Its democracy and economy have gained strength` Gul said.
Expressing the hope that his visit to Brussels would give new impetus to Turkey’s EU process, he said `Turkish people are committed to this process and it will go on like that`.
Barroso, for his part, said that Turkey and the EU had strong relations.
Underlining the fact that it was the first time the commission had a president-level visit from Turkey, the EU Chief said he had an open and sincere meeting with Mr Gul.
Recalling that ten chapters have been opened so far in the negotiations, he said two more chapters could be opened during the rotating presidency of the Czech Republic.
