Cypriot Citizenship Grandson

Postby gpapas » Fri Mar 27, 2009 11:08 am

Yassas Pedia,

I just had a question on whether I would be entitled Cypriot Citizenship. Here is my siuation:

1. My Grandfather was born in Cyprus in 1937. He left Cyprus and came to Australia in 1954 but did not register nor renounce his right to citizenship. He was a British Subject and died in 1981. My Grandmother was Greek but she died in 1983 so I'd imagine she was entitled to citizenship as well??

2. They had my Mother in Australia in 1957, but she has not registered either.

Am I entitled to apply for citizenship through my Grandfather somehow?

PS. The rest of the family is Greek. I could get Greek citizenship but the process is such a hassle.

Thanks for any help

Your case is very similar to the one of Jason Demetriou, a football player in the UK of Cypriot ancestry that wanted to play for the Cyprus national team http://www.politis-sports.com/cgibin/hw ... onlinenews Apparently what is needed for Jason to get the Cypriot citizenship is to come to Cyprus with his father and bring his grandfather's birth certificate with him. Then both him and his father should get the Cypriot citizenship. So probably is more hassle to get the Cypriot citizenship than the Greek one :(

Most people don't try to beat the bureaucracy, they just want to join it!

If I only need a birth certificate and to come to Cyprus it is much easier than in Greece.

The Greeks want Baptismal, Parents Marriage, Grandparents Marriage, Australian Police Check and I need to find the village my Grandfather was born in and obtain his records from there!

It's a joke!

Don't forget that your father will need to come also and get the citizenship as well. And you better call the embassy and ask them because maybe there are more details.

It's my Mother who is Cypriot. Not my Father. Will that be an issue?

Greek citizenship law based on blood ,therefore despite where you have been born, you are entitled to be a Greek citizen .

You have just to contact a "KEP" dept (central people service office) where you can find all documents you need
