I just had a question on whether I would be entitled Cypriot Citizenship. Here is my siuation:

1. My Grandfather was born in Cyprus in 1937. He left Cyprus and came to Australia in 1954 but did not register nor renounce his right to citizenship. He was a British Subject and died in 1981. My Grandmother was Greek but she died in 1983 so I'd imagine she was entitled to citizenship as well??

2. They had my Mother in Australia in 1957, but she has not registered either.

Am I entitled to apply for citizenship through my Grandfather somehow?

PS. The rest of the family is Greek. I could get Greek citizenship but the process is such a hassle.

Thanks for any help

That's probably even better; you won't have military obligations.

It shouldn't, but it might be. If your Mother had the Cypriot citizenship it wouldn't be an issue, but because she doesn't then she will have to get the citizenship first and then you.

If he gets the citizenship he will have. I hope this is something he thought about.

Military service makes no difference to me. I would have the obligation whether I applied for Greek or Cypriot citizenship. I can't escape the obligation. The difference is I will be living in Greece so can therefore stay in Greece and keep my abroad status as far as Cyprus is concerned, thus avoiding service.

yassas gpapas,

I am in a similar situation as you-I have a Cypriot grandmother and have been told by the consulate I eligible to apply for citizenship once my mother has. However, I only have my grandmother's baptism certificate from Lemesos, not her birth certificate. If you have had any experience trying to get one I'd appreciate your advice. The KEP link appeared only to be for Greece not greek cyprus.
Thanks,
Claire

I know I'm late on posting, but I hope this will help.

My mother (did not apply for Cypriot Citizenship) talked to my cousin and his wife that are attorney in Cyprus in the South and North last week. If either of the Grandparents are Cypriot blood (originally from Cyprus) the grand kids can get it. If the Grandparents is alive they have to be there, if the Grandparents are deceased you need there death and birth certificate to apply.

My older sister did apply a long time ago while our Grandmother (Cypriot) was living at the time but she could not travel to go back to Cyprus. They did not grant my sister Cypriot citizenship. Now that my grandmother past away she can re-apply for it since my mother have her mother birth and death certificate.

Hope this help.
