The European Countries Biologists Association Council Meeting is being held in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The opening ceremony for the council meeting, which will continue until the 28th of March, was held today with the attendance of President Mehmet Ali Talat. In his opening speech at Buyuk Han in Lefkosa(Nicosia), the President pointed to the significance of holding such international events in the TRNC, adding that the event was giving hope to the Turkish Cypriots who have been suffering under an international isolation. Noting that Cyprus is a country rich with its biological creatures which were in danger now, he expressed the belief that the studies of the European Countries Biologists Association would seriously be considered by the government. Also speaking the President of the Turkish Cypriot Biologists Association Niyazi Turkseven referred to the intense efforts being waged by the Turkish Cypriots towards gaining their position within the modern society of science but complained that there were still a lot of steps needed to be taken towards realizing this objective. He reminded that the Turkish Cypriot Biologists Association was registered as a full member of the European Countries Biologists Union in 2006, adding that its membership allowed them to communicate and share information with their colleagues. Later, another speech was delivered by the President of the European Countries Biologists Association Harm Jaap Smit. He said the world has been experiencing a difficult period in terms of biology as well as economy, adding that biologists have a word to say for the creation of sustainable conditions to promote the fields of health, food and energy. Pointing to the low level of rain falling in Cyprus, he underlined the need for taking urgent actions in order to protect the unique heritage of fauna and flora on the island.`Many governments around the world have formed green initiatives” he said, underlining the importance of raising public awareness on the issue through education. The European Countries Biologists Union Council Meeting is being attended by representatives of biology associations from 17 countries. The opening ceremony ended with a concert by the Lefkosa Turkish Municipality’s Orchestra.
