Turkey will never allow this to happen

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Turkey will never allow this to happen

Greek Cypriot side is trying to get NATO membership so that it can use it as an advantage on the Cyprus issue .

Speaker person of TRNC Presidency Ercika says today :

Greek Cypriot sides attempts for NATO membership through the European Union Ercakica said that it was not possible before a settlement is reached on the Cyprus issue.‘Turkey will never allow this to happen’

He also referred to recent interview given by the leader of the Greek Cypriot administration Dimitris Hristofias as disturbing.

Referring to Hristofias’s statement that ‘if a solution isn’t found to the Cyprus problem, we plan to put the blame on Turkey’, Ercakica called for the Greek Cypriot leader to give his full attention to finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Noting that the Turkish Cypriot sides only aim is to find a just, permanent and comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem, Ercakica said if a solution isn’t found, it is not going to matter who was to blame as it will create such a huge problem in Cyprus and in the region.

‘That’s why the sides should give their full attention towards finding a solution instead of creating new problems’, he added.

Referring to Hristofias’s meeting with the Pope at the Vatican on Friday, Mr Ercakica said the Turkish Cypriot side was aware of the Greek Orthodox Churches negative influence on the Cyprus issue and added that they have been struggling to overcome these problems as well.

Christofias is not going to try and join NATO as a turkish veto is obvious and knowing that he can portray himself as a man of principles by declaring he will never seek to join. Interestingly enough, even if we assume that the ROC somehow joins NATO, how exactly is that going to help it?

Lastly, the greeks puting the blame on turkey is nothing new, they will place it on everyone but themselves (bar the typical retort of a few extremists who were anyhow not as bad as the turkish one), the issue is who is listening and who gives a rats ass after 35 years but them?

Anything can be expected from Christofias... From 1960 to 1964 AKEL was supposedly against ENOSIS, all of a sudden it switched to pursue Enosis policy from 1964 till 1967. AKEL stopped pursuing Enosis policy in 1967 because it wasn't in interests of leftists to become under control of Junta regime.

Akel was supposedly against EU accession of so-called RoC but for the sake of national cause Chris accepted to support EU accession of Cyprus.

Now Chris tells that he is against NATO membership of so-called RoC I bet soon he will begin struggle for NATO membership of so-called RoC.

Insan, it dosent matter what he wants the ROC can simply not join it without bypassing turkeys veto. It just wont happen. All he can do is get rejected which he wont. Hes going to stick to the line that ideologically he is against it. If there was a small chance that the ROC could enter it im sure he would consider the membership although im not sure how he would sell it but given that it dosent exist this is all BS talk.

Canadian Defense Minister asks for change in NATO consensus on admitting new members

March 8, 2009

Canadian Defense Minister Peter McCay has asked NATO to change the concept on accession of new members, because of recent problems the Alliance has experienced with Macedonia and Croatia.

At a meeting with his US counterpart Robert Gates in Washington, McCay asked NATO to revise the article for consensus in order to avoid any possible failures due to bilateral issues, such as those between Greece and Macedonia and Slovenia and Croatia, which result in blocking the Alliance while admitting new members.

McCay suggests the present system to be replaced with a new system where at least two countries must object the accession of a new member, which means Greece will no longer be able to prevent Macedonia from joining NATO.

This is very simplistic. I would agree that the ROC would have massive leverage over turkey if the rest of the EU was dying to take turkey overnight and the ROC was the only reason it couldnt join. TUrkey would probably conceed to a lot of your demands during negotiations if that was the case. But given the vast majority of the EU public is wary to turkey entering, france and austria as well as the netherlands being openly against it and have now put a public referendum in place for any such possibility turkeys gates into the EU have long been shut and turkey understands this full well. ANy EU talk by AKP is for public consumption only and most editorial comments in the major newspapers aside from idiots like mehmet ali birand also recognise this. Even those optimistic are giving dates such as 2020-2025 before any eventual accession. Your veto with all these constraints for membership is worthless. If anything cyprus will be used as a tool for when 2020 or 2025 does come for negotiations. At that point in time we will be discussing an event that happened 51 years ago since 74 and approximately 60 years since 63. You will be begging for the annan plan then. Unless of course getreal starts using proteinmax with his workouts and then singlehandedly takes back the north before that date. In that case you still wont need your veto.

Insan- for the new voting scheme to pass every member has to accept that canadian proposal. Turkey and greece aint accepting that mate.

if it wasent for turkey trying to join eu and cyprus being able to veto then turkey wouldent care about a solution to cyprus ... cyprus has to pressure turkey to allow a solution in cyprus... hwo else will cyprus convince turkey to stop being *****'s more pressure on turkey is good. if turkey was in eu now then they wouldent care a less about finding cyprus problem they would be happy to stay an unrecognised state forever..

Palio, Cyprus problem is an international issue. No matter what so-called RoC does or not. Even TRNC has been a recognized entity but still the Cyprus problem existed. The main issue is the disputes between Hellenes and Turks and how it affects the Western alliance and globalization of the world.

NATO membership would alienate RoC from other forces such as Russia, China, etc. that recently gained a lot of power.

Moreover it would not put pressure on Turkey to remove her troops from RoC. On the contrary, stupid things like guarantor rights would be reinforced since RoT would argue that her troops are twice legitimately on Cypriot ground. :x
