US Greek lobby in bid to bar Clinton-Talat meeting
A US-based Greek lobby has made efforts to prevent a planned meeting between US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat from taking place.

Announcing his travel plans to the United States scheduled for late March, Talat said on Friday that he was also planning to meet with Clinton during the visit.

In a rapid reaction to the planned meeting, 11 leaders of the US-based National Coordinated Effort of Hellenes (CEH) sent letters to both US President Barack Obama and US Vice President Joe Biden, greeknewsonline.com, an online Greek-American weekly newspaper, reported over the weekend.

The CEH leaders issued a strong warning, pointing out that "certain officials in your administration are considering actions that are on the verge of extending the Bush administration's doctrine even further by establishing a Cyprus policy that contradicts both of your clearly articulated views on the issue," the newspaper reported.

It also noted that the warning came just days before a meeting of the Greek-American leadership with Obama, during the White House celebration of the Greek Independence Day.

Greek Orthodox Church in America Primate Archbishop Demetrios, who is going to be leading the Greek-American delegation, is scheduled to have a meeting today with Clinton at the US Department of State. In addition to the issues of the religious freedoms and human rights of the İstanbul-based Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, Archbishop Demetrios is expected to raise the objections of the community in a meeting between Clinton and Talat, the report said.

Greek orthodox church involvement in Cypriot politics is not as bad as Greek Orthodox church involvement in US politics. So far the Archbishop has gone to see both Obama and Hillary!

No, DT. The Primate was only sending a message from his flock. We are mobilized and our voices, few as they may be, will be heard this time.

It would have been a ridiculous action by the State Dept anyway. Apprently a meeting with her Cypriot counterpart Markos Kyprianou is now being planned.
