Turkish Cypriot Leader Seeking Settlement Over U.N. Parameters

LEFKOSA - The Turkish Cypriot president said on Tuesday that his country was seeking a settlement to Cyprus problem within the scope of United Nations (UN) parameters.
President Mehmet Ali Talat of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said that his country wanted a federal settlement within the framework of UN parameters.
"Our position in Cyprus negotiations are fairly clear, and we have no confederation demand," Talat told reporters after meeting Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias at the buffer zone in the island.
Talat said that Turkish Cypriots wanted a bi-zonal and bi-communal federation set up by two founder states that had equal status and two nations who would enjoy political equality.
"This is federation, not confederation," he also said.
Talat and Christofias had their 23rd meeting at the buffer zone earlier on Tuesday to find a comprehensive settlement to Cyprus problem, and discussed European Union (EU) issues.
The leaders are expected to meet again on March 24 to continue discussing EU issues.
Cyprus talks, which was interrupted when Greek Cypriots rejected a United Nations (UN) plan (Annan plan for solution of the Cyprus issue) in the twin referendums held on April 24, 2004, resumed in September 11, 2008 following the victory of Demetris Christofias, AKEL chairman, in the presidential election held in Greek Cypriot part of the island.
