The US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has invited for talks in the State Department, the leader of the Cyprian Turks Mehmed Ali Talat, announces the Greek newspaper “Ethnos,” which is basing the information on an anonymous American source. According to the publication the meeting is going to take place, even though there is some reservation among the American diplomatic circles that it will provoke a bad reaction from Athens and Nicosia. And it is true – this reaction did not wait long.
Athens and Nicosia characterize this invitation as highly provoking and it violates the international isolation of the Cyprian Turks and confirms the political positions of Talat himself in a moment when the US administration has not showed interest to meet anyone from Cyprus. Of course, let us not forget that Hillary already visited Ankara and Barack Obama will also do it in the beginning of April – both of them are going around Athens.
Nicosia takes the actions of the US Secretary of State as very unfair and biased, because inviting Talat comes at a moment when all negotiations between him and the Cyprian president Dimistris Hristofias are going on. “Ethnos” newspaper claims that Talat’s invitation was asked as e personal favor by the Turkish Prime Minister Redjep Taip Erdogan during Hillary Clinton’s visit in Ankara. After that she had asked for the opinion of the US embassy in Nicosia, which answered positively about the idea and stressed that the invitation will help Talat also in an inner-political plan. Mehmed Ali Talat will firstly visit New York, where he will meet UN’s General Secretary Ban ki-Moon and after that except for Hillary Clinton, he will also meet James Jones – national security advisor in the White House.
