How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

I have a sense of humour, it's just that you are very subtle with your attempts at humour. There were no such things as fairytales back then. I read so many stupid things on this forum I don't always know when someone is joking or being serious.

You will learn. GR has a sense of humour and can lead you all along. Then he can be serious and whip you all. Sometimes you cant tell the difference , as you said. As O said, he is as Greek as all of you.

Its been an entertaining chat. Civilised too. Thank you. Some others should take note.

Now I have some salmon to prepare.

Bye

I've been reading this forum for years now so I doubt I'll ever learn.
GR is a complex creature that is not easily understood.

Enjoy your salmon. :D

As to leaving the thread? what do you take me for. We are here to communicate and not run away at your say so.

For your evidence to be credible, next time leave out the Greek Mythology. It dilutes your arguments.

Regards

Deniz-du-du dear

I know you have bigger fish to fry at the moment, but I am trying to appreciate this aspect of history where you have to interpret in context, and according to the beliefs, traditions, rules and taboos, of the people of the time.

The fact that the parents of Alexander the Great believed they had ancestors from Greek mythological gods (as we understand them to be now), does not mean you interpret it today as non-applicable as a fact, or an argument in support of them considering themselves to be Greek, as Simon listed.

It would be the equivalent of say in 1000 years time, people no longer believing in the existence of the one (present-day) God, and then throwing out the idea that the Pope could ever have been the "leader" of the Catholics because he believed in this mythological creation called "God".

I like that comparison .... :D

Oracl you are stimulating as ever. It is most honourable of you to take the references to Mytholgy as being the Gospel truth. Here's another thing that comes to mind. The old and new testament and its contents still open toarguments amongst the scholars. Some even questioning whether Jesus in fact ever existed. Never mind all that. Isnt it good to be able to question all these events in the Classical times? Can we not question authors of sources/events?

Did Homer write the Iliads Odyssey as a fable? Simon is quoting him. Dont get me wrong. Like many with inquisitve minds, I too have read many of the clasics long ago. Among a lot of fantasies there may have been truths. I never questioned them then. Like the old and new testament. They are all part of ones culture and we do respect that.

Now the subject has reared its head among Greeks, and there sure are fireworks going off.

Whether Homer wrote the Odyssey as a fable or not is not really the point den and I still think that you do not understand what I am saying.

The point is, Alexander believed Achilles to have been a real Greek hero (as did his parents and in fact most Greeks at that time) and he believed he descended from him. In fact Alexander idolised Achilles. We know it to be a fairytale today but that is not the point. You have to understand it in its context. This is clear evidence that Alexander believed himself to be Greek. My previous post outlining all the evidence I gave was originally in response to GR, who stated that the Macedonian kingdom had nothing to do with Greece. I have clearly provided enough evidence to debunk that myth.

So, has Simon realized yet that Greeks are nothing but pseudo-Mongols?
