You mean there WAS a joint defense program. When was the last time you caught up with National Guard developments... the 90s?

That is purely down to the present govts.

Ever since karamanlis came to power the joint doctrine has been buried deep in millitary bureaucracy. With the election of Christofias this has been buried even further. If you get a combination of DISY-PASOK or DEKO -PASOK in power at the same time then it will be back on. Off course a defense doctrine that is dependant on politics is nothing to count on. Greece has repeatedly stated that after 1974 there is a cassus belli against Turkey in case of further attacks against Cyprus...(stable/door/closing/horse/bolted) but nevertheless a cassus belli has not been retracted and Turkey knows that.

Thanks DT for stating what I was about to.

It is clear that if Turkey attacked the free areas, Greece would act and Turkey knows it.

You idiots! Who gives a rat’s arse about a Greek “cassus belli” now that half the fucking island is gone???

That’s no different to Greece condoning Turkey’s 1974 invasion and occupation and just making a hollow threat IF any more territory is captured!

Gee… thanks for all the fish Greece!

When was the last time Greece participated in Nikiforos?

GR,

You said yourself in another thread that an attack on the RoC could be 'staged' which could spark war. In this instance, there would be huge pressure on Greece to intervene militarily. Greece does not have the excuses it had in 1974 to do nothing.

But I do agree with you in the sense that Greece should definitely be doing more and should absolutely resume Nikiforos.

The last time it was invited. Read my last post, AKEL & Karamanlis are not exactly a combination that brings to mind Spartans and Persians.

A question I've been wanting to ask, how many (roughly) Greek troops are there stationed in Cyprus today (ELDYK)? Still 950? Or are there more due to the Turkish occupation?

950. There might be 10 or so more officers in the National Guard including the Chief.
