Erdal Guven, one of the speakers of the ‘Susurluk, Ergenekon, Cyprus’ panel felt the need to separate the Ergenekon mentality from the Ergenekon case. This mentality continues to cause a threat to our democracy. The progression of the case is more of a concern to the judicial bodies in Turkey. No one should be surprised if one day the case spreads to Cyprus. Mehmet Altan asked specific questions of the panel relating to the Ergenekon hearings: What happened to the woman arrested in possession of drugs? What became of the car full of explosives? How can a woman arrested in possession of drugs disappear without trial? How is it possible that in a state governed by the rule of law, a car found to be fully loaded with explosives causes no legal process? Would any of these fit a contemporary state of the law? Who should we address with these questions? Who was the Prime Minister when all these things happened? Who made the threatening phone calls mentioned by Basaran Duzgun? Where did the bombs placed at the homes of the opposition and at the doors of CTP headquarters come from and who made them? Who made the hundreds of threatening calls and letters? Why didn’t the police conduct serious investigations into these matters? Were there any witnesses to the murderer of Kutlu Adali? It is a crime to step outside of the frame defined by law; this is not ok for anyone. It is the biggest sin of all for politicians to create a country where criminals can do as they feel and give them a pat in the back when they break a law.
The Ergenekon mentality
The Ergenekon case is clearly the business of barristers but we need to recognise that this kind of mentality harms the legal fabric of the country. We have the right to ask who set up this system which turns it back on the will of the people clearly expressed over the past 30 years. We asked these questions at the ballot box in 2003, 2004 and 2009. Until politicians own up to their responsibilities we will continue to call them to account. What kind of a system have they set up in this country calling it a state? When will Dervis Eroglu share with the public the reasons why he dropped out of the Presidential Election in the second round against Denktas? Are they trying to make fools of the Turkish Cypriot people who have decided that they want positive leadership?
CTP’s universal values
How would Eroglu fare at the ballot box having remained silent when all these objectionable events were going on? How dare he bring the dark figures of Turkey to this island to glorify them with claims of national interest. How is it possible that all those named in the indictment somehow have Turkish Cypriot citizenship? Is it possible that those in power at some point teamed up with drug dealers to suppress, silence and even kill their fellow countrymen, did they gang up with the forces of a dark power? Who will answer these questions? Did you stop and think of these when you overturned the law within the community? Was it worth it to do such things in order to have the opposition suppressed? You never thought that one day the CTP would rise up armed with universal values and courageously defend them in the most difficult times creating the basic values of our community? The Turkish Cypriot people’s connection with the Ergenekon mentality continues. Mr. Eroglu until you begin a self assessment this will be written in your account; you should be aware of this.
