ONE of the soldiers shot in Northern Ireland last Saturday evening was a Turkish Cypriot from Wood Green in North London.
Cengis Patrick Azimkar, who was just 21, was killed along with 23 year-old Mark Quinsey from Birmingham when they went to take a pizza delivery at their army barracks at Massereene in Antrim Northern Ireland.
Both soldiers were from the 25 Field Squadron 38 Engineer Regiment and they were due to be deployed to Afghanistan.
Cengiz Azimkar, whose father Mehmet is originally from Evdim village near Limassol in Cyprus and mum Eileen is of Irish descent, was described as a talented footballer who had trials with Tottenham Hotspur. He was well liked and according to commanding officer Lt Col Roger Lewis, was ‘dedicated, ambitious and full of energy, always willing to go the extra mile to get the job done. He never ceased to amaze me with his cheerful approach regardless of the conditions.’
The Real IRA claimed responsibility for the shootings. A policeman was also shot and murdered this week in what politicians condemned as an effort to derail the peace process in Northern Ireland and thousands of people took to the streets in Northern Ireland to protest at the killings.
Meanwhile, footballers in the Turkish leagues in London are due to wear black arm bands this week-end as a tribute to Cengiz Azimkar.
