HISTORY BOOKS SHOULD NOT TRIGGER ENMITY
TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat has reminded that all elements in TRNC history books that helped triggering enmity between the two peoples of Cyprus have been removed and expressed the hope that the Greek Cypriot side will soon take a similar concrete action on this.
`We said, and did it. But the Greek Cypriot side has just expressed its intention on doing it. We expect them to apply the intention. We need to get these done because we suffered a lot as a result of enmity between the two sides. We don’t want to re-experience the past` the President said.
Mr Talat, who is in Istanbul for a series of contacts, gave a briefing to reporters right before his meeting with representatives from the Turkish History Foundation.
Pointing to Cyprus’ bitter experiences of the past, the President said Cyprus habitants have a good knowledge on the significant role of history in the formation of communal identity and understanding as a result of a saddening past.
Stating that fanaticism had tormented Turkish Cypriots throughout the history of the Cyprus conflict, the President said the Greek Cypriot Orthodox Church has unfortunately used history as a tool to create enmity at the highest level.
He added that a serious level of enmity has been observed among the Greek Cypriot youth against Turkish Cypriots which keeps coming to the surface through public surveys.
Commenting on the previous structure on history books in the TRNC, Mr Talat reminded that the Turkish history was made prior to the Turkish Cypriot history in the old history books which led to missing information and enmity.
President Talat noted that the Council of Europe has earlier asked both sides of the island to take Germany-France model as an example and rearrange their structure on historical education with the aim of contributing to friendship instead of tension and enmity.
`We did this so. We have cleared enmity elements from our history books and adopted more contemporary teaching methods on history` he stressed.
Saying that the Turkish Cypriot side has realized this initiative unilaterally, he however noted that the Greek Cypriot side has so far failed to do so, although the Greek Cypriot Administration announced a similar initiative to be taken with the presidential election victory of Demetris Christofias last year.
