"""My dear M, please, please consider using the 'charlie' word a little less. It makes me feel unhappy and second class."

Bill , a Charlie is the salt of the Cypriot earth mate , the majority of Cypriots are connected to us Charlies , I'm proud to be a Charlie , I take it in my stride and have never felt second class!!
When in Rome do us the Romans do , but dont poison bloody cats or wear all your jewelry when out shopping , for women that is , for men dont talk gibberish , half Egle and half , well almost half Grieco and never refer to the locals as "The Cypriots ""as if you were from Mars !!
ps . my brother law Charly , a well known personality in Limassol , has the supermarket at the Kanica block next to the Welsh Inn , Charly is known by all as a real character if anyone on this forum knows Charly give him my regards !!

I blend in well with the Cypriots cause I'm one of them !!
LONG LIVE THE CHARLIES !!!!

Nice piece of "spin" M.
I like this "charlatan" word. Shall we relaunch ourselves as "Charlatans"?

Where does the expressions "Charlies" come from?

Was it a Charalambous who changed his name to Charles for the benefit of the Brits that started it off?

The earlyCypriot immigrants to UK did their best to blend in as it were , so a name such as Kiriakos , Gavriel and a few more became Charly !!
I was called John since Yiannis sounded rather foreign , remember that way back in the late 50s early 60s it was considered rude to speak in your own language in front of English people , quite right too , unlike today that people on buses , public places etc converse freely and loudly in their own language .
People called me John it stuck so although I have always retained my official name as Yiannis Miltiades ( I have TWO first names !!!)
Many of us Charlies when visiting Cyprus fall into the trap of talking half English and half Greek dreadful way to omila ego pistevo !!

LONG LIVE CHARLIES THE SALT OF THE CYPRIOT EARTH

Re Pappou John (aka Yianni), in all my many years here in London I have never come across any CyBrit called Charlie. This Charlie business must have been started by the Cypro-Cypriots in Cy.

I know of two Turkish Cypriots called Charlie. To be honest, I dont know their Turkish names. My father was Ibrahim, but his given name (in the UK) was Michael.

OK, so this makes a large number of people in the western hemisphere (also Australia and NZ) who like meat and fish but at the same time who have pets all hypocrites ? Then we all should refrain from keeping dogs, cats, hamsters, birds and aquarium fish to avoid being labeled as "hypocrites" by the king of demagogues General Sotos..

If you love animals then you don't pay to have them abused and slaughtered! I think these people should be called "Pet Lovers", because they love certain pets only.

Well, I guess substantial number of people like me can not call a spider as "Pet". There may be exceptions of course, but then remember:
Exceptions don't break the Rules

And if for you an animal is a pet it doesn't mean that for everyone that animal is a pet. For somebody else it could be a meal or a nuisance, just like other animals are for you.

Another fine sample of demagoguery ! How about extending this to plants as well, since many people like having flowers but use chemicals to kill off some types of wild flowers growing in their garden ? So these are all hypocrites . My,My... a world full of hypocrites !

For example some people have hamster as pet. Other people can have pythons are pets, and they feed them with hamsters! Both people are pet lovers because they love their own pets. Are they "Animal Lovers"?

Listen Buddy ! Chinese can kill and eat cats and dogs and Thais can serve you a live monkey for you to crack open its skull and have a spoonful of its brain for all I care ! To me these are all disgusting and revolting enough !

What is eatable and what is not when it comes to meat is crystal clear for me. What I consider as Pet is on the same par as what many people around do. In short, some animals I feed, some I eat ! If that makes me a Hypocrite, so be it !

We all are part of the world which is able to differentiate between what is a Pet and what is not. Republic of Cyprus may have joined EU just for mere political purposes allright, but in so doing you have to embrace values and standarts of Europeans as well (at least most of them) and there, classification of what is a Pet and what is not is CLEARLY defined. It is clearly defined in Russia, in Israel and in Turkey as well.
Now, If you don't like it go make Enosis with China !

Sick bastards , may they NEVER replace the USA as the new superpower !!

The Chinese are a cruel race of people , they have not the slightest compassion for animals.
Can our military experts tell us if we can take them on once we finish with Turkey , declare war on China right now , sick bastards !
