Cyprus - Playing its Part in World Politics ...

Move over superfluous Turkey! .... (Preferably just get lost!)

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — A key Security Council committee reported Tuesday that Iran violated U.N. sanctions by trying to send weapons-related material to Syria on a cargo ship now docked in Cyprus.

France's U.N. Ambassador Jean-Maurice Ripert described its shipment as "explosives and ... arms."

Takasu said a U.N. member state — identified by the United States, Britain and France as Cyprus — sent a letter to the committee in early February "seeking guidance with respect to its inspections of cargo on a vessel carrying its flag that was found to be carrying arms-related material."

Britain's U.N. Ambassador John Sawers praised "the vigilance and cooperation" of Cyprus and said his country "looks forward to the committee receiving explanations from Iran and Syria as to why the shipment was permitted by Iran as the reported state of origin, and as to the involvement of Syria as the reported state of destination."

Cyprus, with its nearest coastal point only 60 miles (less than 100 kilometers) west of Syria, has traditionally been close to the Arab world. But the Greek-majority island is geographically part of Europe and joined the European Union in 2004.

There has been no decision on what to do with the cargo, though Britain has signaled that it is ready to help Cyprus dispose of it.

Simple:

Turkey is trying to portray itself as a major negotiator in this region of the World, but Cyprus is:

Cyprus, with its nearest coastal point only 60 miles (less than 100 kilometers) west of Syria, has traditionally been close to the Arab world.

.... and the cherry on the cake which makes Cyprus even more appealing, as the one and only necessary bridge:

But the Greek-majority island is geographically part of Europe and joined the European Union in 2004.

So Turkey is superfluous for everything!

Allies in the fight against terror

"Cyprus and the United States are bound together by common values, ideals, and interests and have a history of working together effectively to counter threats to peace, security, and our shared democratic values. Pivotal in this relationship have been our joint efforts to fight threats to global security."

Cyprus is a longtime strategic partner of the United States and continues to be so in the Global War on Terrorism.

Cyprus and the United States have a strong relationship going back, at least, to the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing, when Cyprus provided the staging ground for the United States' evacuation and rescue efforts.

Throughout the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Cyprus has provided over-flight and landing rights to United States aircraft and port access for United States ships. Approximately 800 U.S. military flights have used Cyprus's airports, transporting troops and cargo to Iraq.

Don't forget the thousands of US Marines, Rangers, that are allowed ashore in Limassol before setting foot in Iraq.
It may change a little in the future with the influx of Iranian tourists.

What an absurd post. Just when President Obama announced that his first visit outside the Americas will be Turkey, which is a "friendly and important partner to the USA".

Of course we did announce that we will open an Embassy in Havana and yesterday, we learned that we did a business deal with Iran. Will someone tell us, for the second time, "God help you and your people"?
