Is speaking Greek a necessity for Admin / Secretarial Jobs?

Hi

My wife and I are new to this forum and are really enjoying the advice and experiences from you all.

I would like to introduce ourselves. Our names are David and Angela and we live in Newcastle. I am a long serving civil servant (20 years) and my wife is a Secretary in the NHS.

We have been really interested in recent postings about the availability of admin / secretarial work in Cyprus.

We are still in the early planning stages of movin :roll: g to Cyprus and, with this in mind, would appreciate your views on whether speaking Greek is necessary for Admin type roles. We are aware from similar postings that there is no "golden rule" but would nontheless appreciate some feedback on your experiences and knowledge.

It depends where you go for the job, here int he goverment they want you to be able to speak greek englisha nd turkish.. other jobs they are happy with english only. if you follow the job links on this website you will see many jobs that are ok with english only, just dont expect much pay espesially coming from england you guys get lots more money.

Thanks for your response Paliometoxo, it is much appreciated and nice to make a new forum friend.

We have noticed that the pay is less in Cyprus and will budget for that.

We have also noticed that some of the forum suggest that it is not a good idea for UK folk to move to Cyprus, because of the current work climate with the credit crunch. However, we have a dream of moving to the lovely island of Cyprus in the next few years and are prepared to work towards achieving the dream.

When we move, we plan on renting long term until we settle in and decide on the best area for work. We have heard that Larnaca and Limassol have decent prospects for office type work. We don't really want to work in a bar / restaurant and we think that the competition for jobs would be too great and the younger workers would have more of a chance.

You seem like a polite, well mannered and sincere couple who should have no trouble convincing a would-be employer of your trustworthiness and usefulness.

Welcome to the forum.

There are opportunities out there to be had and if you are looking for the above you should be ok, in my opinion. Tourism is packed with Eastern Europeans willing to work for nothing, and employers who are willing to pay next for nothing!

Limassol and Larnaca will have better opportunities as they are cities in Cyprus, you could also try Nicosia for a place to work.

There are good opportunities too in Paphos but a little harder to find as it's really geared for tourism.

Try approaching some companies direct and see what response you get.

Start studying the situations vacant columns of the local English-language press (Cyprus Mail, Sunday Mail, Cyprus Weekly). This will give you the best idea of what is available.

Limassol is pushing it a bit...but Larnaca a city!!!!! :shock:

Only one city in Cyprus, and thats Nicosia. :D

Probably around 90% of such jobs require Greek. Try some offshore companies. Many of them do not require Greek and the salaries are usually good.
