The London based group Embargoed! is constantly campaigning for the immediate and unconditional end to all embargoes against Northern Cyprus and this week sent a stern letter to all MEPs, but primarily to Dr. Matsakis the southern Cyprus MEP, about his suggestion that all Turkish Cypriots with EU membership should vote in the elections of MEPs. Current Embargoed! Chairman, Fevzi Hussein, wrote on 21st February: “Dr.Matsakis’ call to Turkish Cypriots with EU citizenship to vote in the elections for European MEPs is like asking turkeys to vote in favour of Christmas! Having been excluded from full rights to EU citizenship in 2004, Turkish Cypriots are essentially being asked to support the Greek Cypriot assertions that they represent all Cypriots within the European Parliament and in the EU generally. Accepting this invitation would send an extremely negative signal concerning the Turkish Cypriots’ legitimate claims and their continued unjust isolation. In effect, by voting for ‘Cypriot’ candidates (or even standing as one – if you happen to be among the 0.1% of Turkish Cypriots who might meet the criteria to be a candidate), the Turkish Cypriots would be saying they accept that the Greek Cypriot authorities have a valid claim to govern the North. Sadly, because of the isolations imposed on Turkish Cypriots, some people have opted to obtain Republic of Cyprus passports in order to be able to travel. The Greek Cypriots now want to leverage that position and even talk about identifying ‘suitable Turkish Cypriots’. Dr. Matsakis’ comment that “inevitably” one would have to go to the ‘Government controlled areas of Cyprus’ to vote adds insult to injury.
Talat opposes EP elections
It is not at all surprising that President Talat’s spokesman has indicated the President’s opposition to the participation of Turkish Cypriots in June’s European Parliament’s elections. The call by Dr. Matsakis to ‘compatriots’ is a cynical act by an individual who has consistently worked hard to maintain the isolation of Turkish Cypriots, including blocking access to EU educational programs for Turkish Cypriot universities. He has also previously publicly claimed that archaeological artefacts discovered in Northern Cyprus belong only to Greek Cypriots as a part of “their” heritage and not that of the Turkish Cypriots. Since 1963/64 the Greek Cypriots have collectively done all they can to deny the Turkish Cypriots equal rights in Cyprus. They overwhelmingly and unilaterally excluded the Turkish Cypriots from EU membership in 2004. Since then, the EU has essentially forfeited its role as an honest broker in Cyprus. The idea that Turkish Cypriots voting in European elections now would engender some form of trust is utterly disingenuous. So a big ‘OXI’ to this creaking Trojan Horse.” The Cyprus Observer columnist awaits with interest the MEPs response to the Embargoed! letter and hopes that this ‘drop in the bucket’ of deeper understanding of the true situation of northern Cyprus and the European Union will help to fill the ‘bucket of understanding’ which in the eyes of many is not even half full.
