Moving on

Postby Bessima » Sat Jun 04, 2005 7:39 pm

:P Hi to all out there. Yes I am another newbie joining the' in 'crowd! I'm going to be a bit of a liability at first as I find out what's what and what isn't so please be patient if I turn up in the wrong forum.
First - I and husband are coming to Cyprus on 22nd June for the 6th time. This time it's different as we are going house hunting. No I don't want to end up on some vast 'development' for ex pats. So any suggestions for areas that provide some Cypriot community spirit, a beach not too far away and a taverna close by!!
We have a week which is not very long so every day will count. We do have an appointment with a company that apparently can guide us through the whole maze of emigrating - hope they don't guide us to the dearest properties.....
We love Cyprus and realise that living there is certainly going to be different to holidaying. Any advice - you all seem a knowledgeable lot.

welcome to the forum sandy.

i personally will not be much of a help seeing as ive never lived in cyprus but i think people could help you out by providing more information like what cities you prefer, where you are from, any children or plans for a family. i mean were all anonymous here (sorta) so dont worry :-D

Hi Sandy, welcome to the forum. As regards the company you're seeing, just set yourself a budget and stick to it. They will naturally attempt to lead you towards the expensive end of the market, but if you're firm and aware of what you can afford, you'll be fine. They may also try to guide you towards developments, which will be populated largely by ex-pats. I'd recommend that you have a look at some of the real estate sites on the web such as buysellcyprus for an idea of what properties are costing these days.

Thank you all for being so prompt to reply. Sorry for being so vague! Info - we've just retired and have 7 children between us (3rd time lucky marriage) who are all grown with families of their own. One big dog will be coming with us. We don't want to live in a city neither do we want to live in the back of beyond. I'm beginning to sound picky!! We want to live where there is a feeling of community with both Brits and Cypriots. A village with tavernas, a shop and not too far to drive to the beach would be good. Healthwise, hubby has arthritis and I have slight problems with my back partly due to the occupational abuse handed out by my past occupation (NHS).
I'm a computer freak so I would want to know I could set up my communication centre. Is that enough?
We do have a budget and I would hope that my training as a psychiatric nurse means I can spot a con artist - remembering the 'ass' in assuming

house

Postby thompson » Sun Jun 05, 2005 8:58 am

hi
When we were looking for a property we used Buyandsell.com
We have picked a village called Xylofagou which is about 4km from the coast, 12km from Aiya Napa.
There are a few small dev of houses and apartments
The village has everything you need
The people are great.
Although our house is not finished completely, our son and his friends are stopping in it (no pool, aircon, garden, ( -just like a building site haha).
The builder has rigged up some electric for them
The family over the road cleaned it up(dust) and made their beds for them.
People from the village are calling to see them, the local lads in the village have been showing them were to go etc
The people over the road were having a bbq for them last night
They are coming home on tuesday and we are going over on the 29th of this month (to survey the damage!)
