1. Turkish airlines are bad.
2. Cyprus airways are domestic!
3. Cyprus airways’ planes are bad!

Good old Paphian balanced viewpoints…

I did not say that THY are bad. I said that they have had 13 Air Disasters and that is bad by Aviation standards. THY today could very well still be an excellent airline with improving standards despite the recent accidents.

I also did not say that Cy Air is a domestic airline. I stated that it is a Regional Carrier which does not do any long haul sectors.

I do not think that Cy Air aircraft are bad. I have flown on Cy Air many times and would quite happily fly with Cy Air again and I am very fussy when picking an airline.

If you want balance, then you would do an analysis on the RoC Aviation Department and how they actually contributed to the Helios Disaster. The Helios report is very interesting reading, and if THY or Turkish Aviation Authorities are bad, then the RoC Cyprus Aviation Department is dysfunctional.

I actually believe that the Turkey's Aviation Authorities are in much better shape and are far superior than the Civil Aviation Department in Cyprus. How is that for balance?

I have flown THY few times in the past and it all went well, happy to report. But to those who have never flown on THY before, something very special happens as soon as the plane touches down, and that is, almost all of the passengers start to clap and cheer. I don't know if it's meant to say thank you to the crew for their services , or that they are very thankful to be back on the ground alive and well.!

I wonder what a typical cockpit announcement sounds like when approaching Ercan…

“Ladies & gentlemen… this is your pseudo captain speaking! We are approaching the bogus Ercan international airport so please be on standby with both passports in case the Greek Cypriots have launched an attack and taken over the airport while we were in mid air… thank you.”

Sorry Kikapu, but THY would be an airline I would steer well clear off. There are too many question marks hanging over this airline due to the recent 737 crash and their safety record in general.

But the same could also have been said about some Cypriot Airlines which no longer exist. Even before the 737-300 Helios crash in Grammatico, Greece, I would not have stepped foot on a Helios aircraft even if the tickets were free.

It absolutely amazes me how a company like Helios was able to obtain an RPT Air Operators Certificate from the Cyprus Aviation Department. A company like Helios would never have been allowed to operate in Australia. The Helios Report is quite interesting and identifies numerous endemic failures of the Cypriot Regulatory Authorities.

I will do an in depth analysis of the Helios Air Crash by illustrating key findings of this report later.

As you know, Aviation Safety is serious business, and these matters need to be discussed. Even in Australia, the Aviation Industry can be very critical of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), but in reality Australia is very fortunate to have one of the safest and meticulous Aviation Regulatory bodies in the world.

That's nothing.

On all Cy Air flights I've been on, I always see many passengers doing the GO cross and praying..... and then when we land they look towards the heavens in gratitude and clap...

I believe Helios was already banned from Switzerland for various air worthiness violations, even before the crash.!

Actually, when THY had a code share flights with Swissair (before they went bankrupt and before Lufthansa took them over), I did feel more comfortable flying with THY, but I have not flown with them since. Funny enough, the last time I flew to Turkey from Zurich on THY, my ticket cost 50 CHF less than my Swiss girlfriend's ticket, because we bought the ticket at a THY agency and the fact that I spoke Turkish, I got a discount, but when I told them that I was from Cyprus, they tried to take it back.!

They did not succeed.!

I have flown SunExpress few times and had very good service by them. I particularly like their fare structure that one can save a lot of money if one is a little flexible with the dates.!

Are they not owned 50% by Lufthansa though.?
