Is Turkish Airlines Unsafe?

If you give Olympic airlines the necessary time to carry the same number of passengers, their accident rate should also grow.

On the other hand, go to the list of airlines with no fatalities

http://www.planecrashinfo.com/noaccident.htm

and you will find the Turkish charter airline Air Anatoila, which operated from 1996-2003 without a single fatality. How's that?

From what I can see, only 8 airlines have a worse safety record than THY from the 88 in the table. So they are in the “Ten most accident-prone airlines in the world”.

CBBB, some airlines are not even members of international CAA and are even condemned by it. You'll find most of these exist in African countries with horrific stats.

Thanks for the tables Tim, as I said... if you compare the number of passengers Turkish airlines carried against Olympic they're in the same boat!

There are many factors to take into account. Turkish Airways flies to a lot of destinations in Central Asia where air traffic infrastructure is poor. This may influence its statistical performance.

As the statistics I found do not inlcude the latest THY crash, it appears that in the last 20 years they have had 3 fatal accidents for around 2 million flights. So the chance of being killed on a THY flight are 666,667 to 1.

A rough calculation tells me that the chances of being killed on the roads in Cyprus is 6,667 to 1.

Can THY fly me from home to work and back everyday?

Anyway, I’d sooner jump into an Aeroflot or China airways plane than some unknown Liberian “Bongo Air”!

Did you know that Olympic Airways is one of only 2 international airlines that has not had a major Jet Crash?

Olympic Aviation and Olympic Airways are not the same company.

And when I say International Airlines, I do not include Cyprus Airways which I regard as a Regional Airline only.

Olympic were always on strike, so not much chance of a crash!
