"Secularism" is the topic here, and yes TRNC is probably more distant with religion than Turkey can ever be.

Even then they are both secular and the "RoC" is the total opposite.

You are still run by backward idiots who choose worshipping fairy tales and dressing like clowns as a full time job and are respected enough to help run the country

Second of all do you even know what secular means??

The "RoC" is literally RUN by those ugly monks, all teh Turkish imams can do is run up the mosque and make annoying sounds every morning.

You are at the BOTTOM of the list, infact you are not even on the list because you are not a secular country.

for your info matey...the head of ths state in the UK is also the head of the church.

So what is you point? That UK is secular or that Turkey is not?

How can they be secular if the guy is also the head of the Church?

I thought secularism was all about not mixing religion with government.

Aren't the Imams Turkish state sponsored?

Don't the Imams get told what to say, via a Turkish Parliamentary prepared speech?

Isn't the whole set up of Turkey to suit the Sunnis?

Aren't they still waging war about wearing headscarves?

Aren't honour killings on the rise?

Yeah, Turkey not secular ... pull the other one, it has Church bells

All religion related issues are dealt by the specific minister (Diyanet Işleri) who only deals with these, Imams don't have a say in anything nor they are qualified to do so.

All they do is run prayers and ceremonies, funerals etc.

Not sure what you mean by "set-up" but Sunnis are on the majority yes, however they also have large number of Alevi's plus many Süryani's, Jew's, Greek Orthodox, Catholics etc.

Headscarves are not a real issue, only banned from universities and government offices, that's all.

The whole "waging war" ordeal is political and not religious and in order to understand the matter you need to read about Turkish history which you should anyway since you are so interested in us

Honour killings are not on a "sudden the rise", they were always a problem and they have nothing to do with religion as they are called HONOUR killings, guess what they are about?

Honour is actually a misleading translation, they are called "Namus or Tore" killings. "Namus" does not mean "honour" its more on the lines of "decency", doesn't have a direct translation as its not a concept that Europeans understand (), Tore means Tradition.

You do not need religion to feel like you need to "defend" your "honour", they are usually about getting some family back for killing one of your own and so forth.

But as usual you are way out of your league Oracle, you do not have a clue.

Maybe you should take a trip to you local church and get some help in finding the "right path"

It's rather sad that even with something like this, you are duty (honour) bound to defend Turkey.

Of course Honour Killings are inter-wound with religion ... most of them are Sharia based.

They have taken a new twist more recently since Turkey has been trying to join the EU, and now instead of family members committing the Honour Killings, because of greater fear of punishment, they pressurise the women (sometimes men too) into "Virgin Suicides" where they are emotionally blackmailed into taking their own lives so that no one is left responsible for punishment.

Karma posted a link some time ago, but it's too late for me to go hunting on something like this ...

Goodnight!

OK Oracle you know best!

Human Rights Watch defines "honor killings" as follows:

Honor crimes are acts of violence, usually murder, committed by male family members against female family members, who are held to have brought dishonor upon the family. A woman can be targeted by (individuals within) her family for a variety of reasons, including: refusing to enter into an arranged marriage, being the victim of a sexual assault, seeking a divorce—even from an abusive husband—or (allegedly) committing adultery. The mere perception that a woman has behaved in a way that "dishonors" her family is sufficient to trigger an attack on her life.[1]

Here is the first definition that pops up on a simple search.

Any reference to religion in there?

Even this doesn't fully explain the crime since long lasting tradition killings are just as widely committed. Yet the insufficient translation attempt by the Europeans have left that part out.

This has nothing to do with Sharia.

I have no reason to defend this horrible crime which I find it just as backward as religion and you apparently, but I will not stand by and watch you talk absolute crap in the hope to insult Turkey.

At least pick a topic which you might have the slightest knowledge on.

Anyways how the hell does any of these relate to secularism in the first place??

The "secularism" Turkey always brags about is actually called "Laiklik" in Turkish which is not directly translated as "secularism" but it is commonly done so.

"Laiklik" actually translates closer to "Laïcité".

Meaning keeping state and religion separate, which Turkey has done so for many years while most of Europe (including you) still have their backward priests sticking their noses in everything.

The fact that backward priests stick their noses in everything is irrelevant as hardly anybody takes any notice of them. I fail to see how this is not obvious to everyone!

Well its not irrelevant.

If one wants to be clever and make laughing stock out of Turkey's secularism then they should first look at the mirror and then talk.

Obviously no mirror can withstand Oracles inner beauty, so she clearly has issues on that part

Hmmm... if even Kissinger by request of the then US president took so much notice on the then archbishop Iacovos to confer with; why should not the ruling elite of Hellenes?

I admit thats what the Hellenes were doing in 1974, priests were talking with US politicians. What was Turkey doing in 1974? preparing an invading force to kill thousands and displace 1/3 of the population on the island?

The document is dated September 1974. US was trying to restore the so-called Greek honour after the shameful crimes of Hellenes in Cyprus. US didn't want to get in a mess with millions of Greek Americans. US embargoed Turkey and backed a number of artificial resolutions against Turkey for the sake of keeping Greece in Nato for her interests in Balkans and Greek American votes.
