Another joint move for peace in Cyprus comes from Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot trade unions.
Turkish Cypriot BES and Greek Cypriot SIDIKEK have announced their annual joint plan which aims to bring the two peoples of Cyprus closer and promote the solution process.
In a press conference held in South Cyprus yesterday, the two trade unions reiterated their commitment towards working for lasting peace in Cyprus.
The plan includes a wide range of events such as mutual visits, children’s activities, language courses and some other educational activities.
All these will take the start with the 8th of March- World Women’s Day.
In his speech, SIDIKEK’s Secretary-General Andonis Neofitu said they have been trying to contribute to the development of cooperation and friendly relations between the two sides through the organization of bi-communal activities.
He noted that this year’s plan is richer than the past ones.
Also speaking, BES President Birtan Aktolga expressed the determination of BES and SIDIKEK towards creating a global unionist voice.
Underlining the need for fostering the solution of the Cyprus problem, Mr Aktolga stated that last year’s presidential election in South Cyprus which gave Dimitris Christofias the victory was a great step in re-launching negotiations, but also noted that the Turkish Cypriot expectation towards reaching a political settlement within 2008 was not met.
