Here is the background to the picture; a couple of weeks back I was on holiday in Sri Lanka for the Independence Day celebrations. I have a good friend in Cyprus who asked me to visit her family while I was over there and see her new house. I was based in Colombo and her house, set in the jungle, was a long and slow 425km round trip.

Everyone turned out to see me; the family, the family's friends - about 30 people in all. Some of the children had never seen a white person before except on TV, they would look through the window and run away if I looked at them - I chased them with my camera and we all ended up laughing. No-one spoke English but I had a driver and interpreter.

My friend had spent 10 years working as a housemaid here, sending money back so that her brother could build this wonderful house; it was unlike any other house I have seen there and was designed by my friend.

I was made so very welcome and treated like one of the family; a day I shall never forget. Aftrewards I visited the local Bhuddist Temple where my friend had paid for a Bhudda to be built.

Irrespective of race, colour or position in life I have so much admiration for anyone who has a dream and works so hard to achieve it.
