North Cyprus Elections

Postby halil » Sun Feb 22, 2009 2:58 pm

The High Electoral Council has announced the official start of the timetable to hold early elections in the country.

The electoral council also announced the number of contingent for deputies allocated for each district.

As expected the number of deputies reserved for the Guzelyurt district was reduced from 7 to 6 while Iskele’s contingent was raised from 5 to 6 deputies.

In light of the new chances, the senior governing Republican Turkish Party which had earlier announced its Iskele candidates will now determine its last candidate at its next central executive committee meeting.

According to the new distribution, 16 deputies will be elected from Lefkosa, 13 from Gazimagusa, 9 from Girne, 6 from Guzelyurt and 6 from Iskeke district.

The deadline for parties to name their candidates has been set for the 10th of March.

Candidates will be officially announced on the 23rd of March and parties will be able to officially launch their campaign propaganda on the following day.

Campaigning will end a day before the election is scheduled to take place on the 19th of April.

On Wednesday, the TRNC Parliament had overwhelmingly approved the bill at an extraordinary session.

The vote took place a day earlier than scheduled because of the general strike by trade unions.

UBP wants mandate from people ‘to be in the government alone’
The General Chairman of the main opposition National Unity Part (UBP) Dervis Eroglu has asked the North Cyprus electorate to give the Party a mandate “To be in the government alone.” Official publicity has now started, in accordance with the election calendar that allowed Eroglu to make a statement at a press conference held, with the general election candidates at the Party’s headquarters. He stated that the Party would work so that a ‘clean’ publicity campaign would take place that the people deserve. The UBP would obey the resolutions of the Supreme Election Board (YSK), said Eroglu, doing everything they could in order to ensure that an elite publicity campaign without exuberance, provocation and accusation would take place – one that the people deserve. He also stated that they had visited Dr. Fazil Kucuk’s Mausoleum, Ataturk’s monument and the Memorial of Martyrs. “The country is going through difficult times and the people, who have financial and social problems, worry for the future,” Eroglu said. He then referred to the development and change projects which the Party put forward in their election statements and said that they would explain them to the electorate via radio, TV and through advertisements.

Time for national unity

Stating that, “The game is over, now it is time for national unity,” Eroglu argued that all the opinions and ideas of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) between 2003 and 2009 turned out to be lies. “They make the opposite of what they had said,” he argued. Dervis Eroglu said that it was “time for national unity” because: “For the truth to take the place of lies; for the destruction in the economy to be overcome; for the development and new projects that will carry our economy into the future; and bringing natural gas, electricity and water from Turkey; for the colleges to be opened; for increasing our influence on the Cyprus issue; for a lasting and fair solution.” Arguing that the public opinion polls have shown that “the UBP was at least 15 points ahead of its nearest rival,” Eroglu said: “We will be in the government alone according to the data at hand. We ask for authorisation from our citizens to be in the government alone. Why to be in the government alone? Because, unfortunately, coalition governments cannot be as fruitful as they want to be. There are very important things to do.”

CTP announces election declaration
Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader and Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer stated that “The Cyprus Problem is a fault line” adding that there “Should be earthquake proof buildings in all earthquake areas.” Soyer said: “Those who claim that the country has been burnt down to ashes disregard the fact that the development in the country is a result of the solution policy being pursued and they mean to block the way to the EU.” CTP announced their 19 April early elections declaration in a cocktail party organised at the Near East University (NEU) Library. CTP Leader and Prime Minister Soyer also said that the Turkish Cypriot community needed to structure their economic, democratic and social development in preparation to unite with Europe and the rest of the world. He stated that while they work for a solution they also work on systems to be in sync with the Copenhagen and Maastricht criteria adding that the adjustment programme would be announced and presented to the EU after 19 April early elections.
Soyer also drew attention to the fact that the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) was more receptive of the steps taken by the Immovable Property Commission set up in North Cyprus. The Prime Minister said that although the Green Line Regulation was not completely operative, the North had sold 7.5 million euro-worth of goods to the South, that this was an indication that economic values had increased and motivated the sectors.
Soyer said that during the 5 year term of CTP there were 4 elections including the referendum, government crisis and boycotts however many things have been achieved, the Gross National Product Growth (GSMH) rose to 3.6 billion dollars from 1.2 billion dollars. Import rose to 1.5 billion dollars from 470 million dollars, which was a result of the dynamic of the people in opening up to the entire world.

Development demands courage

The CTP would be the first party in the elections, Soyer stated as they did not mention issues such as ‘Bringing water from Turkey’ in the electoral declaration as it is a project that has already started; but issues such as ‘Using Water Resources More Efficiently and ‘Maintaining Better Water Management’ or ‘More Efficient Water Usage’ had better coverage. ‘Development Demands Courage’ is the 133 page party manifesto that tells the electorate of the actions already taken by the CTP as well as those it will take in the future regarding the solution of the Cyprus Problem, EU membership, constitutional changes, sustainable economic efforts, work to be made to get the Turkish Cypriot people ready to compete internationally and the next 5-year target. Following the announcement of the candidates the propaganda will start this week.
All parties and independent candidates will be allowed to decorate the streets and walls with party emblems and posters, distribute all kinds of leaflets and printed matter. No Turkish or Turkish Cypriot flags, religious phrases or Arabic letters are allowed on any of the propaganda material.

The Democrat Party (DP) has now announced its manifesto for 19 April. In his written statement DP leader Serdar Denktas said that 19 April was a day of “decision” adding “April is a day in court for our people to regain their stolen freewill through the elections and although the freewill was overturned in the last elections it has been more like the theft of their freewill and the offender has been the CTP.” He continued: “Our people will decide to heal our country’s wounded democracy through these elections, and show that they will not accept any kind of interference and not lower their heads. At this point the Democrat Party’s duty is to draw a road map for the future for our people as part of their political responsibility, with the proven respect of the Turkish Cypriot community towards their own origins, an honourable fight to protect their equal rights with the whole world watching, would let everyone know ‘we are also in this country.”

Can ‘rose in a bell jar’ and ‘free market’ coexist?
27.03.2009

Birikim Ozgur

The UBP representatives say: “When the CTP was a communist party we were championing the EU and we are still the most informed about the EU criteria.” They also add: “We brought the free market economy to this country.” First of all we have to question this approach, because the intention lying behind this is to deceive the public.
‘I will say what the voters want to hear so they vote for me. I will attain power by any means necessary.’ This mentality is not valid in politics. While the UBP played the biggest role in this society missing the EU train, the leader of the UBP put himself in a comical position when he said “We are championing the EU.” If Dr. Dervis Eroglu has put his signature to disregarding fundamental components of the free market economy in this country for the sake of establishing a destructive system based on individual interests, it is necessary to create a self-critical mechanism and say something new to the Turkish Cypriots in order to become dependable again.

No hiding place

It becomes clear why it is necessary for the UBP to define the new conditions without hiding behind the excuses. The reality of the faulty mentality of UBP that shows itself in promising jobs and positions to people and promising to erase businessmen’s debts to the government, is still continuing. Also the fundamental condition required to move closer to joining the EU and the application of a free market economy is to be at peace with the idea of a ‘solution and an EU vision’. Otherwise all will be left in the air. If you do not mention ‘solution and EU membership’ the Cypriot Turkish community will be like the ‘rose in the bell jar’. Anything in bell jar is beautiful but there are obstacles between it and the real world. How will the free market policies be applied if the Turkish Cypriots cannot clearly base their fundamental policies on a certain understanding that links them to regional ‘attraction’ centres? When will all the difficulties be overcome? How will an economy develop which includes features to attract local and foreign enterprise and put it on a sustainable development track? It is not possible.

Solid UN resolutions

If you do not say ‘a federal solution and EU vision’ and make up some new ideas like ‘first confederation and then transition to federation by evolution’ they laugh at you.
It reminds us of the beauty in a bell jar who said ‘I will not meet him if he cannot bring me the tulip in the Mount Kaf ‘dream country.’ Now that we are so close to a solution the UBP does not have the power to discard the ground based on UN resolutions which are also adopted by Turkey. This country is not buying their stories any more so economic policies are very important for CTP’s target of gaining 25+ parliamentary seats.
Does CTP, which comes from the left-wing tradition, incorporate policies that will bring a competitive economy to a sustainable development process?

An economic model

When the party refers to a competitive economy does it foresee a laissez faire approach which leaves everything to the market? Or do they champion a system where the state gives necessary equipment to firms and individuals to help them stand on their feet in this competitive world? How much will CTP be committed to follow financial policies and prevent budget deficits while applying the protectionist state policies in this competitive world if they adopt them? Where are efficient public services within this economic model? Will it be possible to eliminate the mentality of spending millions on unnecessary things when trying to keep up the appearance of providing public services?
Will the left-wing CTP be able to take the necessary measures to fill in the black holes created by the UBP by distorting the social state, within the next five years?
For years it is has been urged that adopting the role of the state as a referee will strengthen the competitive economic conditions all around the world.

The Green way

Today when speaking of crises the position of the state has been seen as a coach more than a referee. Around the world the state is seen as the one who sets the rules of the game and supervises the players and at the same time guides and takes a supportive position playing an efficient role at the point of getting over crises.
The Green Way has the infrastructure – solution and EU vision - for a sustainable economy which is in coherence with the rest of the world. But for people to appreciate and support the economic leg of the Green Way the CTP has to explain it to people

So, the UBP does not like to share power with anyone else. They believe in Majority Rule.!

This argument must kill those who insists equal power sharing with the RoC. I actually agree with the UBP. There can only be one driver driving the car at any one time. If you add the second steering wheel, you will have a crash, or 1963 all over again.

If a society is not politically and intellectually mature enough, be sure of that the majority rule turns into a majority tyranny like GC community attempted in 1963 but failed. Moreover, according to ur immature logic; had the population ratio of 2 communities been equal, it would have been impossible for 2 communities to rule Cyprus together where power was shared 50/50. Kikapu, plz check ur brain and logic for obvious errors.
