PRESIDENT TALAT AND HIS WIFE ATTENDED FUNERAL OF CHRISTOFIAS’S FATHER-IN-LAW IN LIMASSOL
President Mehmet Ali Talat and his wife Oya crossed over to South Cyprus today to attend the funeral of Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias’s father-in-law Stelyos Hiratu who passed away earlier in the week.
Greek Cypriot police escorted the President and his convoy to Limassol where the funeral was held.
The two leaders and their wives stood next to each other during the funeral service.
Thanking President Talat for attending the funeral service, the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias expressed the hope that Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots will once again live happily together.
Among those who attended the funeral were Greek Cypriot ministers, deputies, high level military and state officials as well as politicians.
From the North, the Secretary General of the United Cyprus Party Izzet Izcan was present at the funeral.
Last Thursday’s scheduled meeting between President Mehmet Ali Talat and the Greek Cypriot leader within the framework of comprehensive talks had been postponed following the death of Christofias’s father in law.
The meeting between the two leaders has been postponed to this coming Wednesday on the 25th of February.
The two are expected to continue discussions on the property issue.
