Cyprus problem is issue of human rights says Greek president.

President of Greece Karolos Papoulias has said he feels the Cyprus problem is an important issue of human rights.

CNA reports that during a toast at an official dinner in honour of visiting Azeri president Ilham Aliyev, President Papoulias said: “an extremely important issue of human rights that continues to afflict our region is the Cyprus problem, where part of a country member of the EU is still under the Turkish occupation, and Nicosia remains the last wall-divided capital of Europe.

Obama will act on Cyprus

GREEK AMERICAN LOBBYIST SAYS U S PRESIDENT WILL TAKE STEPS FOR SETTLEMENT

By Annie Charalambous

Greek-American lobbyist Andrew Manatos believes the Barack Obama administration will take steps on Cyprus that “we haven’t even dreamt about over the past eight years”.

“If I had to bet money, I would bet that in four years’ time steps will be taken on Cyprus that we haven’t even dreamt about over the past eight years,” he told The Cyprus Weekly, yesterday.

“Once this President is finished with the economy crisis and the Iraq issue, he is going to get more involved with Cyprus, and his vice-president (Joe Biden) even more than him,” he added.

Manatos, a former Assistant Secretary of Commerce in the administration of President Jimmy Carter, gave a lecture in Nicosia last night on ‘What policies to expect from the Obama/Biden Administration – in general and with respect to Cyprus’.

He arrived here last Saturday together with a delegation headed by Illinois Senator Richard Durbin. With them was another Greek American, Illinois State Treasurer Alex Giannoulias, a close associate of President Obama.

Manatos, who is scheduled to meet President Christofias this morning, believes the incumbent US president is more informed on Cyprus than any other former president, and so is Biden and possibly new Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

They have close friends and associates who are of Greek or Cypriot descent and can have a great influence on them. He noted that it was no coincidence the word “invasion” was used in the Obama/Biden pre-election policy statement on Cyprus.
