ERCAKICA: TURKISH CYPRIOT SIDE PLEASED WITH INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY’S INCREASING ATTENTION
The Turkish Cypriot Side is pleased with the increasing attention shown towards the Cyprus Problem, Presidential Spokesman Hasan Ercakica has said.
He said that the attention shown was in harmony with the Turkish Cypriot Side’s goal for an immediate and comprehensive solution to the Cyprus Problem.
Speaking to reporters during his weekly press briefing today, the Presidential Spokesman Hasan Ercakica said that Turkish Cypriot Side was pleased with the recent visits to the island by foreign envoys. He said that the increased attention of the international community towards reaching a settlement on the island proved that their positions and views were being understood.
“This attention is completely in harmony with the Turkish Cypriot Side’s goal to achieve an immediate and comprehensive solution to the Cyprus Problem” he said.
Ercakica also said that the visits created ideal opportunities to convey their positions and views regarding a settlement.
Touching upon the EU Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn’s recent visit to the island, the Presidential Spokesmen said they were pleased with the balanced statements and views put forward by the EU Commissioner during his stay.
Also commenting on the recent developments regarding human smuggling, Ercakica said that such incidents demonstrated the need for international cooperation in tackling and preventing such crimes.
Reminding that the operations of a human smuggling ring had been foiled last week as a result of such cooperation, the Presidential Spokesman said that it was their desire to see the implementation of decisions taken by the Technical Committee on Crime and Criminal matters.
“These decisions which foresee the sharing of intelligence in order to prevent organized such as human smuggling must be implemented urgently” he said.
Responding to questions as to whether or not a settlement will be possible by this fall, Ercakica said that there was no such agreement between the two leaders.
“The reason that pressed us to make such a prediction is the natural time table as well as the international community’s steadily increasing attention” he added.
He said that the Turkish Cypriot Side expected the give-and-take process to begin by the summer and for a Burgenstock style final phase to take place in the fall because that is when the natural time table will come to an end.
“What I mean by a natural timetable is the EU’s decision regarding Turkey’s membership in December as well as the Presidential elections in North Cyprus in 2010” he added.
Touching upon the US Senator’s visit to the island, Ercakica described the US envoy’s visit as a warming up exercise.
He said that the TRNC Presidency was pleased with the new US Administration’s interest towards the Cyprus Problem.
