TIMESCALE FOR AN AGREEMENT

70. President Christofias was elected in February 2008 for a five-year term, but he is subject to the internal dynamics of Cypriot politics. The European elections in July 2009 may be an obstacle to the negotiations. Mr Talat's electoral mandate expires in 2010. President Christofias is in a stronger position in terms of his popularity with his own community: he presently has an approval rating of 75%, compared to 45% for Mr Talat. The real deadline is probably the last week in July 2009, the start of the summer holidays. By then the talks will have to have shown substantial progress and look like an irreversible process.

If no solution is found in 2009 or 2010 then the Cyprus problem will simply remain unsolved. This means all Cypriots will continue to have a problem. The GCs will not have access to their land, and the TCs will continue to suffer the consequences of their illegal occupation.

But while until now the non-solution was a problem only for Cyprus, if a solution is not found soon then Turkey will have a major problem as well, since her EU accession process will come to an end.

Always doom and gloom...but still life goes on, anything scenario is better than capitulating to GC dominance, discrimination and persecution.
