How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

The diaspora needs to stick to lobbying their own governments and to finally stop selling out their votes on the same promises every George, Bill or Cameron makes.

There is a difference with being a patriot and doing everything for your country within the forum of the diaspora organisations and another thing knowing the personalities and agendas of the people I'm voting for in Cyprus.

Why the hell should someone from Toronto have a say on whether the country will spend 800 million Euros on a 12 minute route from Polis to Paphos!!!

With all due respect DT.

We are all transitory as far as the long term good of the country is concerned. I don't know of any Cypriot Diaspora who do not have homes / attachments in Cyprus. Therefore one way or the other, they will be tax payers, although not at the level of most residents. But then again someone like you, may pay way more in taxes than a street sweeper ... but that does not mean, he does not have a right to as much say in spending power for infrastructure, as yourself.

The long-term benefits to Cyprus, of so much continuing support, from the Diaspora, is paramount ... especially faced with the bleakness of so many Turkish Settlers to "neutralize", at some point

I didn't think I mentioned tax anywhere Mrs O. You have however analysed to me the benefits of the support of the diaspora to Cyprus and not the benefits of direct involvement in municipal, parliamentary and presidential elections.

Its very simple, if you're a citizen of the Republic of Cyprus then you should be able to vote.

This law BTW was not passed for the diaspora but for the students.

You got up my goat by mentioning my home turf ... :D

I KNEW THATS WHAT GOT YOU!!!!!

I bet you're behind this white elephant....Nearly a billion Euros so that the muchtaris of Polis can visit Pittokopitis 6 minutes faster!

No actually sweetie ... I thought it wasn't going ahead. :? I object to it strongly. I thought maybe you wanted it to go ahead, so that you can reach civilisation faster :D

I love my slow, leisurely, windy route through the mountains (although I put my foot down passing Stroumbi the Great, for obvious reasons). Even when I am stuck behind a cement mixer, it's just an excuse to relax and go at my usual 40 Kph, guilt-free of personally holding others up. :)

Not only is RoC the most disrespectful country on earth, but damn right careless too.

How dare you leave all the dead out of the register, just because they have a little local difficulty in first registering and then actually voting? I am sure you can set up an office both in heaven and hell to give a chance for all those innocent people either you killed or caused the death of as well as those politicians and the priests that have played the leading role in that Cinemascope film created by those bloody foreigners, called the Cyprus Problem in the first place.

I see the no voters are getting desperate. Perhaps you can include all the future generation to come in that vote as it is their future you are gambling with.

Just a passing thought and all that.

By the way the Greece contingency will need ballot papers for at least 10 million votes. That list of yours is just damn right racist, to exclude the rest of the Greek population.

Fred , you are , just like O , talking rubbish now .
The RoC is extremely well respected through out the world. The so called puppet creation of Turkey , the mickey mouse military "trnc " is a farce , you know that ,so does the majority of the TCs . It is an embarrassment to most of them an utter fallacy and a cumbersome hindrance to those that want a better future for them selves and their families.

Because that someone from Toronto is a Cypriot citizen, probably even a war veteran or refugee, and is probably also more loyal to Cyprus than most Cypriots living in Cyprus.

It is not as if Cyprus has ever had strong effective governance. All we see is 1 blunder after another, the manipulation of Cypriot History being just 1 example.

We don't care about your infrastructure spending, but we do want a Cyprus that is economically sound and free from occupation. And I guarantee you that there are many Cypriots in the Diaspora that spend more man hours for this very cause, whereas most of you are apathetic!

When all these patriots have sat on the green line wasting away for 26 months along with the rest of us I will agree with you.

Give us a break.

Just because someone does national service for 26 months does not make them a patriot, especially when most do not take their service seriously. Most of you would also try and get out of it, if you could and consider national service as a waste and not a service to your country. But hey, it is an obligation you must fulfill and nothing more. It is time Cyprus taps into its Diaspora, because here uyou will find a more resilient and patriotic Cypriot. Defeatism must die, and before too long your Government will have you apologising to Turkey. :?

When we go to Cyprus, we see very few patriots. You may be different, but the fact of the matter is Cypriots are not patriotic and most do not care about the Cyprus Issue. It could be said that Cyprus is taken for granted by so many of you.

If you want to find real patriots, then you need to venture out to the US, Australia, Canada to find them. I am not saying that I am one of them, but we clearly have many people who contribute much to Cyprus in terms of the national struggle.

Rubbish, TCs prefer the TRNC to the "RoC" or they would all move to South Cyprus.

That is the most sensible thing posted here in a while.

The Diaspora is critical, and without it Cyprus is lost.

So many countries utilize their Diaspora in a most effective manner. Israel, Greece and Turkey being prime examples.

Cyprus has an abundant resource of highly intelligent and motivated people which it needs to utilise and bring closer.

Most democratic nations actually allow their citizens the right to vote whilst living permanently abroad.

Illegal Turkish settlers were allowed the right to determine the island's future whilst refugees living abroad could not.

How are you going to differentiate between a student and a Cypriot expat living permanently abroad when they too also hold a RoC passport, and ID card? Most Cypriot students who come to Australia actually end up staying here permanently anyway, and Australia is very keen in adopting them by offering huge salaries and incentives, particularly if their qualifications are in demand.

Once you allow students the opportunity to vote, then you also pave the way for those Cypriots that actually hold Cypriot citizenship, ID card and voter's book.

The Cypriot Diaspora may be some 492,000 worldwide, but in reality there are probably only 50,000 or so that are actually citizens. Most are not even Cypriot as they do not consider themselves as such, don't speak Greek and will never visit the island. In a few more years there will not be any Cypriot Diaspora, but Americans, Australians, and Canadians with Cypriot names.

Cyprus has a duty to include its Diaspora within its nation and not abandon it. Abandonment WILL be a diabolical national tragedy, for which there is no turning back from.

Milt, how dare you compare me to O, that is worse than calling me Greek!

Do you not see the desperate act of the non-solution voters. They are assuming that all ex-pats will vote no, but they are wrong.
It was meant to be a joke. It made me smile.

Diaspora bill passed...

Postby Pongo » Tue Feb 10, 2009 12:58 am

Who, exactly, will be allowed to vote from amongst the Cypriot diaspora?
Would, for example, second-generation Cypriots in Australia have this right? The statistics mentioned by GR a few posts back, are interesting (I assume the numbers mentioned include second and third generation Cypriots in each of the countries mentioned). Whereas countries with ample resources (for example, the US) have the werewithall to verify the status of their expats abroad, does Cyprus have such resources? What safeguards would be in place to make sure there is no abuse of the system?

Any info would be appreciated.
