Talat: “We Are Pleased ''

Talat: “We Are Pleased to See Once Again That the Policy Pursued With Determination by Turkish Cypriots For the Solution of the Cyprus Problem is Being Supported” Babacan: “Turkey Will Continue to Support the Sincere and Constructive Efforts of the TRNC Aimed at Finding a Just and Lasting Settlement”

President Mehmet Ali Talat said that Turkey gives full support to the Cyprus negotiations process and stressed that this support is very important. “We are pleased to see once again that the policy pursued with determination by Turkish Cypriots for the solution of the Cyprus problem is being supported,” said President Talat.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan, on his part, stated that there is full agreement between Turkey and the TRNC with regard the efforts to solve the Cyprus problem. “Turkey will continue to support the sincere and constructive efforts of the TRNC aimed at finding a just and lasting settlement,” Babacan said.

President Talat and Babacan were speaking during a joint press conference following their meeting.

President Talat stated that full-fledged negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem are continuing, and that Turkey is giving a strong support to the negotiations process.

“We really need this (support),” said Talat. “As everyone knows, Turkish Cypriots are unconditionally supported only by Turkey. Therefore, this support is of utmost importance. Unfortunately, although we are the side that wants solution, peace and to put an end to the Cyprus problem as soon as possible, we are still under unjust isolations. These unjust isolations are so pressuring that our thread of life with the world is sometimes almost cut. This is the reality that disturbs us and even pushes us to the point of revolt. But this reality also highlights the importance of the support of the Republic of Turkey , which eases our loneliness.”

President Talat said that during the meeting, they made a detailed evaluation and discussed the problems that they face. He thanked Mr. Babacan and his team for their support and expressed confidence that this support will continue. “I want to assure everyone that we will utilise this support for the solution of the Cyprus problem and for peace,” said Talat.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan stated that they had a fruitful and productive meeting, adding that President Talat gave them a detailed account regarding the comprehensive negotiations process.

“I can gladly state that there is full agreement between the Republic of Turkey and TRNC in this respect,” Babacan said. “Turkey will continue to support the sincere and constructive efforts of the TRNC aimed at finding a just and lasting settlement.”

Babacan continued as follows:

“Without a doubt, it would not be possible to reach a settlement on the island only with the efforts and good will of the Turkish Cypriots. It is essential that all parties involved make sincere efforts within the framework of the UN Secretary General’s Good Offices Mission, with responsibility and seriousness. Established UN parametres and agreements reached between the leaders must be taken into consideration.”

Babacan described the basics of settlement as; political equality, true bi-zonality and a new partnership comprised of two constituent states of equal status. “The new partnership will contribute to peace, well-being and stability not only on the island, but also in the whole region,” Babacan noted.

Babacan also underlined that the continuation of the Guarantee and Alliances Agreements is an indispensable element of any solution. “Turkey, as a guarantor, will continue to fulfill its responsibilities stemming from international agreements…,” said Babacan.

Babacan highlighted that Turkish Cypriots, who have done everything in their capacity to reach a permanent and just settlement on the island, are still faced with international restrictions. Babacan stated that the promises should be kept so that this unfairness can be done away with.

“The TRNC’s determination to go ahead with settlement efforts is admirable,” said Babacan. “The lifting of these restrictions is a necessity for the credibility and consistency of the international community and especially of those that made some promises.”

Babacan stated close relations with the TRNC will continue in all areas with determination. He said Turkey will continue to provide Turkish Cypriots with freedom, wealth and comfort.

Asked to comment on Christofias’s statement that Turkey may not join the EU as long as its troop presence in Cyprus continues, Babacan stated that all sides must have a positive approach towards the process. “It would be impossible to reach a solution through a policy based on negativenesses,” Babacan said. “Therefore, I call on all sides to be careful about what messages they give to the public and I want them to focus on solution.”

Asked about the two seats allocated for Turkish Cypriots at the European Parliament, Babacan said seat allocation is directly proportional with population. “The six seats have been allocated for Cyprus taking into account the Turkish population,” said Babacan. “Therefore, I am hoping that Europe is evaluating to whom those two seats really belong to and who has the right to take those seats.”

Asked about ports, Babacan reiterated that he would recommend all sides to focus and work on a solution.

Responding to a question about the confessions of Turkish actor Atilla Olgac, Babacan reminded the journalists that Turkey has launched a legal procedure on the issue.

Halil you must see that Turkey can not possibly continue as a "guarantor" having failed in its obligations to the Cypriot people in ensuring , as a guarantor power , the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of the island of Cyprus as per the terms and conditions of the Guarantor status incorporated in the Zurich agreements.
To state that Turkey mus continue as a guarantor is to say the least reprehensible.
Turkey has not acted in the best interests of Cyprus by installing thousands of settlers in order to change the demographics of the island.
It is inconceivable that Bababca can make such statements while ignoring the fact that some 40 thousand of his troops are stationed on Cyprus soil contrary to the Zurich agreement and his country's role as a guarantor power.

Its your idea Miltiades for u ,
it is necessary for me with my reasons . As long as my reasons are existing ............ Many times our side said when the time comes troops will go home . The plan u did not like our people were satisfied with it .Most of the Troops were gone now and at the end only 650 T and 950 G troops were going to stay after Turkeys joining to EU may be there will be no more troops at all .First to build up the bridges and trust between 2 communities and 2 countries are very important and it will not done at one night .Now Greece and Turkey is doing better than us .Both countries people are visiting each other and doing businesses together also their partners with big projects .
First of all in here GC's must not see us as a thief's Miltiades . We are both suffered in this island .When the TC's keep hearing everyday same claims against them .how do u except from them to agree with your ideas . (When i say from u i don't mean personally from u )

Thief: "One who steals, especially by stealth."

Since when does theft get justified or excused because of prior "suffering"?
