Nearly right....

Done a line measurement with a handheld bandwidth and distance tester in Limassol. Customer was literally next door to the exchange. Line distance was over 1km.

Copper went from exchange, to a cabinet 500m away before coming back to the house. Was a poor pair anyway as the max bandwidth was only 11mbps max. Got Cyta to change the pair which bought it up to 21mbps max.

My line, I lice 2km from Exchange so the maximum I can have is 11mbps here. 4.7km.......wow, you must get alot of timeouts on your line Bill C?

Definitely mate. 4.7kms according to the service provider. Goes for a few weeks without problems and then it grinds to a halt. Phone up the service provider who tells me we get loads of "errors". They tweak a few things and it gets back to normal.

Funny thing we live in London! Right on the edge and there are no cables from the likes of Virgin down our way and no prospect of them laying cables so we have no choices.

Sorry to hear your not getting on so well in cyprus, we do have 10mbit cable connections but its 99 euro a month and very limited to who can get it but even if it was available to me i would not get it at that price!

Cytanet have 4mbit for 30 euro a month i hope to upgrade my 2mbit soon to that, and virgin medias 50mbit is not available to all its customers yet but by summer it will be.

Though they offer 10,20 and 50 nothing less. And if you get 50 and nothing else its 51 pounds per month less then our 10mbit lol, but they offer a crap upload speed for 50mbit.

Soon cyprs will catch up with these speeds in 5 years lol, colleges already have faster but they pay thousands per month.

In the UK, if you live near the exchange you tend to be served via direct cable, so no cabient involved.
