Not even an Engleso Kyraios!

Postby eleni » Thu Feb 05, 2009 11:27 pm

After being married to my husband for over 30 years, learning to speak a passable amount of Greek & learning to cook most great dishes, christening my children GO & being occasionally reminded that I married a foreigner!(in the UK) (we came to settle in Cyprus 2 yrs ago). :D
Yesterday I went to sort out our medical pink cards to be told although my papers (yellow Alien slip) were in order, my husbands weren't, his taftotita says he's British & so do his parents although both born in Cyprus & he will now have to go and register as an Alien and get a yellow slip! I thought this was quite hilarious, we have been coming over here since 1980 for holidays and every time he had to get an exit visa to return to the UK!!!! my son has even had to get one. Why!
I came home and had to break it to my family that we have been living a sham all these years.

Up to 1960, Cypriots were “British subjects” for obvious colonial reasons. If his parents can produce Cypriot birth certificates then he should satisfy his eligibility for Cypriot citizenship.

Your husband should need, only, his own birth certificate. His parents should be on the database and that would be enough, without the need for their certificates. You only have to know their dates/places of birth.

For most Greek Cypriots who were resident in the UK during the years 1955-1960, they could visit Cyprus and live here, but could not vote and my husband had to re-apply for citizenship as a Cypriot to qualify to vote and I did the same.

We both have Cypriot ID cards which state we are both British Cypriots. However, in my case, I was born in the UK and raised as a Catholic and we got married in a Register Office. After 44 years we decided to get married in the Greek Orthodox Church, three days after I was baptised in the local village Orthodox Church here in Cyprus in 2001.

If you look at your ID it will say for Nationality : Cypriot / British which means dual nationality not "British Cypriots" since British Cypriot is not a nationality .

I would ask your husband to go and see the department and DEMAND that his ID describes his Nationality as Cypriot / British . To do this he must speak fluent Cypriot , not Greek but Cypriot a much more expressive language when it comes to arguing or putting your point acroos to Cypriot authorities.
My wife who is English was once referred to as a non- Cypriot by someone in authority. I reminded him that I was the father and she was the mother of a son that the government considered a Cypriot and demanded an exit permit each time he departed from Cyprus.
Some times people in authority in Cyprus can be a pain in the behind , you have to deal with them accordingly.

Well I did go straight to the immigration dept and spoke to the guy in the office (in saladika xorkadika! Cypriot, Not Greek) because being married to an Engleso kypraio that is what I have learnt! I explained that his father was born in Ayios Amvrosious Kyrenia! & mother Rissokarpasso! & yes they were in the UK 1960. He totally agreed that my husband does not need a yellow slip & he only needs to have his ID changed to Cypriot/British & told me to go to the office & tell them to change it! All this whilst my Husband was at work he had no Idea what was going on. Enough for one day.
Yesterday I went to the ID office explained the situation, the lady said, no! he dosen't have to change anything and will not require a yellow slip either! she phoned the advice office in Molos to tell them that they should issue the medical cards and they were having none of it they have phoned Nicosia and I am now waiting (probably till next year) for them to phone me to tell me what has got to be done!.
I do know about the 1955-1960 thing but he is entitled to his ID his grandparents on both sides were here & if they can make him require an exit visa after a holiday or call him for the army. then they can give him a medical card!
