Naming our child GC and English Parents

Postby lipa » Thu Feb 05, 2009 12:07 pm

I married my GC husband last year (I am English) and we are now expecting a baby. We always agreed we would name the baby after his Father/Mother I was not aware that I could not have my parents names as a middle names, is this being unreasonable?? My husband said GC do not have middle names?? I want to please my husband but do think this is a little unfair as i would like some input into my childs name. Can anyone offer any advice please? :(

Congratulations on the forthcoming child.

You stick to your guns the childs name can be what ever you want it to be.

why not give the child a double barrelled name if you want to follow tradition ie maria-ann

Thanks but he is saying he does not want to compromise and that it would look bad as the name should be exactly as his parents is, with no exception!!

This is causing a lot of upset......which is no good for the baby, and i feel like I am going to have no choice but to back down......its making me really down

Answer this questions and then I will tell you my opinion. Is there a tradition in the UK for the grandchildren to be named after their grandparents? Do any of the grandparents have any other grandchildren named after them already? How many siblings do you have? How many siblings does your husband have?

This is my husbands first child, I have one daughter already and yes her middle name is my Mothers and this is what I would like for all our children.

Both my brothers and myself have our parents or grandparents names as our middle names.

No this is their first Grandchild.

Is it that unusual or disrespectful to include both Grandparents names?

I do not want to offend anyone at all!!

It is not disrespectful but it is unusual. Usually in Cyprus we don't use middle names. Since you already have a child named the way you want, and your parents already have children and grandchildren named after them, and this is the first child of your husband and the first grandchild of his parents then I think you shouldn't make such a big issue and let him choose the name. I don't find unreasonable what you ask for but maybe you shouldn't create a big issue out of this since what he asked is not entirely unreasonable. :)
