SWEDISH PARLIAMENTARIANS RECEIVED BY EKENOĞLU AND AVCI
A group of Swedish parliamentarians who are in the Republic are continuing with their contacts on the island.
This morning, the parliamentarians held discussions with the Speaker of the Parliament Fatma Ekenoglu and deputy-Prime Minister Turgay Avci.
The Swedish MPs will leave the Republic on Friday.
Swedish MPs Anne Ludvigsson, Kerstin Engle, Gunilla Wahlen, Monica Green and Ameer Sachet are continuing their contacts in the Republic.
Speaking during the visit Foreign Minister Turgay Avci said that he had been very pleased with his contacts in November in Sweden and had invited Swedish parliamentarians to visit and see the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus for themselves.
Pointing to the importance for Swedish parliamentarians to see first hand the investment opportunities, universities and the realities of the Turkish Cypriots, Mr. Avci said ‘we want to have direct flights to Sweden, be able to sell locally produce cheese, like hellim, potatoes and oranges, get rid of our isolations and be treated equally like other countries’.
Foreign Minister Avci said this visit by Sweden to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is sending a message to the world that Turkish Cypriot people do exists and deserve to be treated like any other country.
‘This visit is also going to aid the peace efforts on the island’, he added.
Swedish parliamentarian Anne Ludvigsson, for her part said that they had come to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to get a first hand look for themselves about the situation on the island and to get informed about the history and universities on the island.
She also said that the parliamentarians wanted to evaluate the universities in the north and discuss the issue of Swedish students studying at universities in the north and their diplomas being recognized.
Explaining that they will continue to follow closely the developments on the Cyprus issue, Ms Ludvigsson expressed the hope that a peaceful solution will be found to the Cyprus problem, one that is in accordance with human rights.
