Akritas Plan

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby insan » Wed Feb 04, 2009 6:59 pm

When we take into consideration the then circumstances; the cold war, WW2, nationalism movement, megali idea, ghost of Turco-Greco wars, exaggerated facts to intense nationalism etc... and examine AP from a sociologic, psychologic and political perspective there's nothing wrong with Akritas plan. It was made under the then circumstances, put into action by he or she or them, TCs resisted and it failed.

Under the current circumstances, at least some of the above mentioned circumstances don't exist; instead the most dominant driving force of international, national and local relationships is globalism. One of the biggest obtacle infront of globalism is extreme nationalism and in our case; nationalism fed by the ghost of old wounds of Turco-Greco relationships. There must be somethings to do against the brain-washing and hatred pumping mechanisms of extreme nationalists.

Regardless of who wrote it, and neither you or anybody else knows this, the vast majority of the Cypriot people agreed with the aims of that document, which is nothing more than Cypriots gaining the self-determination which has been denied to them be foreign oppressors.

The ones who are in denial are the ones who think that Cypriots are slaves and should be content with having some "independence" where the constitution of the country is written by British and Turks to serve the British and Turkish interests on our expense.

By claiming that this plan was supported by Makarios, Papadopoulos etc, you are admitting that self-determination and freedom was indeed what the vast majority of Cypriots wanted (and continue to want) since those leaders had the support of the vast majority of the population.

If Cyprus was allowed democracy and self-determination, so we could just get what we want for our own island with a simple referendum, then no "plans" would be necessary to gain for us our freedom and rights.

OK, so the Akritas plan was accepted by the Greek Cypriot population. You call it what you like, whether its self-determination of the GC people or whatever. It was the method and tactics which are questionable. If you thought that the TCs were going to sit back and watch, then you are mistaken. You saw what happened. I suppose you are happy about it. Next time just sit down and discuss things and dont do anything underhand. It was the creators of Akritas who have divided our island.

You mean like we "gifted" Cyprus to EU, and you were threatening us with another invasion if we did what was our RIGHT to do?

Yes my friend, it is our right, it is called self-determination right. We are not "gifting" Cyprus to anybody, we just want to unite with whomever we want in order to protect ourselves and serve the interests of Cyprus.

The pity is that the Turks continue sending their troops and their settlers on our island in their effort to stop Cyprus from being free and deny to Cypriots their self-determination right.

And then you answer your own question:

If you thought that the TCs were going to sit back and watch, then you are mistaken.

Exactly. We already knew very well that TCs and Turkey would not accept democracy and self-determination right for Cyprus. If that was not the case then the tactic would be very simple: Make a referendum and do what the Cypriot people decide.

It was the creators of Akritas who have divided our island.

Who divided the island are the invaders who wanted to divide it. Their plan for the partition of Cyprus existed since the 50s, long before any "Akritas plan". The only thing the Cypriot people wanted and continue to want is their self-determination, nothing more.

Bloody embarrassing. Before the ink had time to dry on the agreements we signed in 1959, the President of the Republic and his close associates, embarked on a mission to achieve what we failed to gain by an armed struggle against the Brits but this time against a seemingly softer target, the Turks of Cyprus, who were rightly seen as an obstacle to the realization of our sacred aspirations. Our excuse: The agreements were forced on us. Absolutely rubbish. They were the natural result of an ill conceived method of struggle that was heading for disaster right from the word go. Piratis’s primitive thought serves him very well. He fails to see the complexity of an issue that we created and blames all our misfortunes on the dreaded “others” whose only concern, it seems, is scheming against the heroic Greek Cypriots. Very embarrassing indeed but sad at the same time.
