Erdogan's LACK of Political Acumen in Davos!

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Erdogan's LACK of Political Acumen in Davos!

Postby MrH » Fri Jan 30, 2009 10:09 am

Would you agree that Erdogan made a seriously political mistake yesterday in walking out of a debate with his counterparts in Davos?

I think so!

This man needs to go, and then we'll have political harmony, and then we'll be able to fight for political Recognition of the TRNC without long exhausted bogus Cyprus Federal formulas, and then Turkey can move Forward - instead of backwards!

The Greek Cypriots are very fortunate to have a Turkish PM like Erdogan, but that may not last too long. Enjoy the good times - in the interim!

WATCH: Turkey PM storms off stage over Peres remarks on Gaza
By The Associated Press
Tags: Gaza, Peres, Iran

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan stormed off the stage at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday, red-faced from verbally sparring with President Shimon Peres over the recent fighting in Gaza.

Erdogan was angry after being cut off by a panel moderator after listening to an impassioned monologue by Peres defending Israel's recent 22-day offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Erdogan told Peres: "You are killing people."

Please note that no translation is provided for Erdogan's comments in the clip below.

A finger-pointing Peres told Erdogan at Thursday's panel that he would have done the same if rockets had been hitting Istanbul.

The Turkish prime minister asked the moderator, Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, to let him speak once more.

"Only a minute," Ignatius replied.

Erdogan said in Turkish that, "I remember two former prime ministers in your country who said they felt very happy when they were able to enter Palestine on tanks."

"I find it very sad that people applaud what you said. There have been many people killed. And I think that it is very wrong and it is not humanitarian," he said.

Ignatius said, "We can't start the debate again. We just don't have time."

Erdogan said, "Please let me finish." Ignatius responded: "We really do need to get people to dinner."

The Turkish premier then said, "Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. I don't think I will come back to Davos after this."

The confrontation saw Peres and Erdogan raise their voice shouting - highly unusual at the elite gathering of corporate and world leaders, which is usually marked by learned consensus seeking and polite dialogue. It showed how emotions remain frayed over Israel's offensive against Hamas that ended less than two weeks ago.

The packed audience at the Erdogan and Peres session, which included President Obama's close adviser Valerie Jarrett, appeared stunned.

Afterward, forum founder Klaus Schwab huddled with Erdogan in a corner of the Congress Center. A press conference with both men was scheduled for 8:30 p.m.

"I have know Shimon Peres for many years and I also know Erdogan. I have never seen Shimon Peres so passionate as he was today. I think he felt Israel was being attacked by so many in the international community. He felt isolated," said former Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik.

"I was very sad that Erdogan left. This was an expression of how difficult this situation is."

Amr Moussa, the former Egyptian foreign minister who now leads the Arab League, said Erdogan's action was understandable. "Mr. Erdogan said what he wanted to say and then he left. That's all. He was right." Of Israel, he said, "They don't listen."

Erdogan brushed past reporters outside the hall. His wife appeared upset. "All Peres said was a lie. It was unacceptable," she said, eyes glistening.

The clip below shows the entire discussion at Davos

There’s nothing easier than destroying war criminals like the Israelis in a debate like that but Erdogan is clearly not the man to do it. What a wasted opportunity!

Most of this was for internal consumption anyhow and because this idiots ego was bruised by peres raised tone. In terms of israel and turkish relaitonship- things are going on as usual

'Terrorist state' or not, Israel expected to sell drones to Turkey

By Zvi Bar'el

Turkey is expected to receive its first shipment of attack drones from Israel next month, despite the comments by its prime minister during the Gaza offensive that Israel was a terrorist state. Turkey is also expected to receive another shipment of Heron drones from Israel.

According to Turkish sources and reports in the Turkish media, the predominantly Muslim country under Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to buy drones known as the Harpy. This armed UAV, developed by Elbit and Israel Aerospace Industries, participated in the Gaza offensive and killed Hamas militants.

Turkish Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul was reportedly impressed with the Harpy's performance on his visit to Israel in October. Another factor in Turkey's decision to buy from Israel may be the delay in a final decision by the United States on whether to sell Turkey Predator drones.

Turkish sources say Turkey would rather buy the Predator because of its rich combat experience in Iraq and Afghanistan. One Turkish source said the reports about the deal with Israel were leaked to try to persuade the Americans to cut through the red tape and approve the sale.

Turkey and Israel signed a deal for the supply of Heron drones to the tune of $180 million in 2005, but delays and malfunctions in the cameras mounted on the drones pushed back delivery by more than one year.

In December, Turkey received two Heron UAVs, and another three units are expected to be shipped in February. Despite Erdogan's harsh statements about Israel during the Gaza operation, Israeli sources say the two countries still cooperate on security matters.

"The two countries are connected by their defense needs," one Israeli source said. "The Turkish defense establishment is behaving as though there were no diplomatic crisis, and the diplomats are behaving as though there were no military cooperation."

One main reason for his annoyance and departure was the applause given to Peres on his arrival. He objected that a murderer of thousands of children in Gaza should be applauded as such. When he was trying to explain what /why etc he was silenced. That was the last straw. I dont like the guy, but his stance in support of the victims of the Gaza onslaught would bring even GR on to his side. Also Pereswas given 25 minutes talk time and Erdogan only 12 minutes. That he did not like one Iota.

And all this happens when the Turkish Gov and the Israelis are improving their Military Alliance. Bloody hell!!
