Attila affair unsettles EU

Postby CBBB » Thu Jan 29, 2009 11:37 am

European Union Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn said yesterday that the admission by a popular Turkish actor – that he fatally shot one Greek-Cypriot prisoner of war during Turkey’s invasion of Cyprus in 1974 and killed another nine – would be “a tragic story of shame and a violation of the Geneva Convention” if it is proven to be true.

Rehn was responding to an e-mail message sent to him by Cyprus Euro MP Yiannis Matsis containing a video showing the actor, Attila Olgac, telling a Turkish television presenter that he killed 10 Cypriots.

Meanwhile Rehn’s spokesperson, Krisztina Nagy, stressed “the urgent nature of the missing issue in Cyprus.” “It is important that families know the fate of their loved ones,” Nagy told the Athens News Agency. She added that Turkey must comply with a decision by the European Court of Human Rights obliging it to cooperate with efforts to determine the fate of those missing.

How will Turkey deny it if it is proved true?
