President Mehmet Ali Talat has said that the property issue which will start to be taken up at Wednesday’s meeting with the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias has a special position at the solution process.
Stating that if both sides have a realistic approach, the difficulties would be overcome easily, the President said they are aiming to solve the problem before the elections at the European Parliament in June.
He added that the solution of the Cyprus problem would also made important contributions to the solution of the regional problems.
Speaking during a panel discussion, President Talat evaluated the ongoing negotiations process and noted that the discussions on the issue of governance and power sharing which had been continued since the 3rd of September 2008 have been completed and they came very close to an agreement with Mr. Christofias over many points of this issue.
Explaining that they failed to reach agreement on some issues due to the unrealistic proposals put forward by the Greek Cypriot Side, Mr Talat expressed the belief that difficulties on these issues would be overcome if real proposals were brought to the negotiations table.
Saying some parts of the property issue are being determined by UN officials in the light of experiences and data, the President added that discussions on the issue will be launched on the basis of data determined earlier
He also expressed the belief that Cyprus will become an island of peace and stability once the isolations are lifted and relations between Turkey and Greece will become stronger.
