A Cypriot is a Cypriot

Postby lyso » Mon Jan 26, 2009 12:24 pm

This is my thought.
Please dont get upset.
Its just a thought.

A Greek Cypriot is a Cypriot with Christian Faith.
A Turkish Cypriot is a Cypriot with a Muslim Faith
Can we remove The words Greek and Turkish
and call ourselves Cypriots
with the relevant faiths
I.E I am a Cypriot.
Your thoughts please without anger.

Michael

I call myself Greek Cypriot because my mother comes from Greece and my father from Cyprus. Otherwise I would call myself just Cypriot (which I am, unless further clarification is required), as would all those people who support the Republic of Cyprus.

Religion does not figure into this at all. It is a relic of the British colonialist simplistic (divisive) attitude.

There are very few "Turkish Cypriots" nowadays .... those who do not support the Turkish invasion (but recognise and respect the RoC) rightfully can call themselves Cypriots also. The rest are Turks.

There are "Tall Cypriots" and "Short Cypriots", "Thin Cypriots" and "Fat Cypriots", "Male Cypriots" and "Female Cypriots" We can divide Cypriots in many different ways. All these are different attributes that each Cypriot can have. "Greek" or "Turkish" is just another such attribute.

What is important is not to pretend that those different attributes do not exist, because they all do. What is important is to accept that all Cypriot citizens should be equal regardless if they are Greek or Turkish, Male or Female, Thin or Fat.

The only reason that we are talking a lot about "Turkish Cypriots" and "Greek Cypriots" is that the attribute of ethnicity (and not gender, weight, height etc) was the one that was selected by some outsiders in order to turn some Cypriots against the rest of Cypriots and achieve divide and rule in this way.

you are ignoring the ROC constitution as usual piratis...
According to the constitution, the treaty was signed between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots...not tall & short or fat & thin Cypriots..

As one who puts Cypriot above all else , will agree with Halil that there are G/Cs T/Cs Armenian Cypriots etc, but all Cypriots.
Just as in the UK there English , Scottish , Welsh and many more , all British nevertheless.
