Cyprus Airways wants compensation for airspace ban

NICOSIA, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Cyprus' national carrier, Cyprus Airways, said it wants to be compensated for damages caused by Turkey prohibiting Greek Cypriot planes from flying in its airspace.
"We have taken steps and asked the finance minister to take Cyprus Airways's request to the EU so that our losses can be compensated," Cyprus Airways spokesperson Kyriacos Kyriacou told Reuters.
It is not immediately clear how much compensation Cyprus Airways' is seeking to claim.
The Turkish ban dates back to 1974, when Turkey invaded Cyprus in response to a brief Greek-inspired coup.
Cyprus Airways said it estimated the state-controlled airline was raking in losses of 6 million euros a year as a result of the ban. That figure was the result of a survey that considered all of the airline's route networks, fuel consumption, flight hours and staff costs.
"On a number of the routes that we operate it takes us longer to reach our destination and costs more because we have to take alternative flight routes due to this situation," Kyriacou said.
Meanwhile, Cyprus Airways' Chairman, Kikis Lazarides, said the airline was mulling the possibility of introducing flights from emerging destinations, where demand is increasing, such as central Europe, Russia and the Ukraine.
