Turkish writer in call-up trial
Perihan Magden arrives at court in Istanbul
Magden is well known in Turkey
The trial of Turkish writer Perihan Magden, who is accused of trying to turn Turks against compulsory military service, has begun in Istanbul.

Charges were filed against her after she argued that conscientious objection - for which there is no provision under Turkish law - was a human right.

She is the latest writer to be tried for her views on sensitive issues.

Shortly after opening, her case was adjourned to 27 July to allow prosecutors to collect more evidence.

At Wednesday's hearing, Ms Magden said she could not believe she was in court, and that she actually had to defend herself for what she had written.

She said she had only defended conscientious objection as a human right and a right that is recognised by the UN and other countries.

She said she was paid to express her opinions as a columnist and she believed that was what she did and that was her constitutional right.

Her lawyer presented a similar case and said the judge would have to decide whether or not conscientious objection was a human right or a means of turning people against military service.

All men in Turkey are conscripted for up to 15 months.

EU criticism

Perihan Magden is well known and her often controversial columns have led to countless court cases.

The charges against her stem from a magazine article in which she argued that conscientious objection was a human right and defended a man in prison for defying the draft.

But this time, the complaints against her were filed by Turkey's powerful military.

If found guilty, she could face up to three years in jail.

Several dozen writers are still on trial in Turkey for what EU officials call their non-violent expression of opinion.

Ms Magden's trial comes just days before the EU is expected to issue sharp criticism of Turkey for its poor record on free speech amongst other things and the limits on civilian control over the military, our correspondent says.

Earlier this year, a Turkish court dropped a case against the internationally renowned writer Orhan Pamuk, who faced charges of "insulting Turkishness".

EU Turkey talks face new threat
http://www.eupolitix.com/latestnews/new ... ew-threat/
The European parliament sees the desecration of Greek Orthodox churches in Northern Cyprus as another ‘hurdle’ to Turkish EU entry.

On Wednesday MEPs adopted a written declaration condemning the pillaging of Greek Orthodox churches and monasteries in Turkish controlled northern Cyprus.

“This is just seen as another obstacle on the way to EU entry,” a parliamentary official told theparliament.com.

“The message from MEPs to Turkey is that they must stop doing this.”

In Wednesday’s resolution MEPs call on the European commission to raise their concerns during Ankara’s EU entry talks.

“This resolution asks for the issue to be raised during Turkish EU negotiations on education and culture,” Cypriot MEP Ioannis Kasoulides told this website.

“The commission should get assurances that Turkey will protect the culture of Northern Cyprus and restore those churches that have been destroyed.”

More than 133 churches, chapels and monasteries that are located in the northern part of Cyprus controlled by the Turkish army since 1974 have been desecrated.

78 churches have been converted into mosques, 28 are used as military depots and hospitals and 13 are used as stockyards.

More than 15,000 icons have been illegally removed and their location remains unknown.

“Turkey should be called upon to cooperate with Interpol to trace these stolen items,” Kasoulides added.

403 MEPs have signed the written declaration.

The first green line, through the capital, was drawn ten years earlier, by a British general -- using a green chinagraph pencil that happened to be at hand.

EU presses Turkey for changes in the treatment of the Kurdish minority and the role of the military.

The EU said recently that Turkey "has lost its appetite for reform."

Tension remained high yesterday in southeastern Turkey, where security forces were reinforced as Kurds prepared to celebrate the Newroz spring holiday tomorrow.

Here's some more knowledge for your collection, insan ...

A survey by a university in Turkey has shown almost 40% support for the practice of "honour killing".

It questioned 430 people, most of them men. When asked the appropriate punishment for a woman who has committed adultery, 37% replied she should be killed.

Twenty-five percent said that she deserved divorce, and 21% that her nose or ears should be cut off.

The survey group was small but the results are a reminder that "honour killing" - a practice where women are murdered for allegedly bringing shame on their family - still has significant support in parts of Turkey.
