distance(how far is)

Not far, but further than a comfortable walking distance. I know that a very frequent bus service connects the two places in summer, but I don't know if this runs at all in the winter.

I don't know that end of the island, but somebody who does tells me that just about everything will be shut in Protaras at this time of year.

as a matter of interest can any of you recomend places to eat, drink and shop in ayia napa because we have actually booked our holiday there now between april 29th and 10th of may

I can't recommend anywhere because I don't know Agia Napa, but things will certainly have livened up in both Agia Napa and Protaras between now and the dates you mention.
