ERCAKICA “WE WANT UN TO TAKE MORE ACTIVE ROLE ON CYPRUS PROBLEM

The Turkish Cypriot Side continues to demands the UN to take on a more active from role on the Cyprus Problem.
Presidential Spokesman Hasan Ercakica said that the Turkish Cypriot wanted the UN to be more active in the current process and was ready to accept possible risks concerning proposals.

He said that their willingness to take those risks demonstrated just how much the Turkish Cypriot Side demands a political settlement.
Speaking to reporters during his weekly press briefing, the Presidential Spokesman Hasan Ercakica evaluated the President’s latest contacts in Ankara.

Explaining that Talat had met with Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Foreign Minister Ali Babacan and Chief of Staff General Ilker BAsbug during his stay, Ercakica said that the harmony in relations between the TRNC and Turkey was reaffirmed at the meetings.

Pointing out that Ankara fully supported efforts to reach an urgent and comprehensive solution to the Cyprus Problem, the Presidential spokesman said that the Turkish Prime Minister had reiterated this stance during his latest visit to Brussels.

Reminding that the two leaders had completed talks on the chapter on governance and power sharing in their last meeting, Ercakica said that the special representatives will be meeting this week to start preliminary discussions on the issue of property, which he added was the next item to be taken up by the two leaders when they meet again on the 28th of this month.

Responding to a question, Ercakica said that the Greek Cypriot Side had leaked information to the press on the comprehensive proposals they have prepared on the property issue.
“As a result we have thus learned about the Greek Cypriot Side’s proposals on the property issue from its own press. This is quite important. It seems we shall continue to carry out negotiations through the press” he said.

Asked to comment about the recent attacks against Turkish Cypriots in South Cyprus, Ercakica said that attacks had a destructive affect on confidence between the two sides which in return negatively affected the ongoing talks. The spokesman also said it would be wrong to describe the attacks as isolated incident.
“We have frequently observed widespread hatred against Turkish Cypriots on the Greek Cypriot Side, Ercakica said, calling on the Greek Cypriot leaderships to adopt a series of widespread measures within the police and other cultural institutions aimed at curbing such racially motivated acts.Answering another question, the Presidential Spokesman said that there no plans for the two leaders to meet in Brussels and anywhere else outside Cyprus.
