Military Obligations

In accordance with the provisions of the Law relating to the National Guard, there is compulsory military service for all male citizens of the Republic of Cyprus. This includes all males residing in Cyprus whose father is Cypriot, even if they do not have citizenship. The obligation commences in the year of their 18th birthday and continues up to the year of their 50th birthday.

Exemptions are listed:

* All Cypriot Citizens residing permanently abroad
* Persons of dual Cypriot and Greek citizenship provided that during their permanent residence in Greece they fulfill their obligation to serve the Greek Army.
* All persons who at the date of conscription have four or more dependents (married with wife and three or more children who are minors)
* All persons who at the date of conscription are considered unsuitable for military service for health reasons.
* The oldest or the only son of a family whose father was killed or went missing while serving in the National Guard.

GM, thanks for that, but I wonder when that piece was written and if it has been updated since EU membership.

The system in CY is discriminatory against cypriots born abroad.

eg. if you are an Overseas Cypriot, you have to pay a deposit for a phone line. locally born you don't.

eg. you can't vote if you are an OSC, but you can if you are locally born.

There are many others, yet, for the National service, you still are obliged to do it as an OSC. WTF, I have no problem per se, but these double standards are horse shit and are archaic in nature.

I am not locally born, I have no Cypriot blood in me, and I don't pay a pushto-Englezos deposit for a phone line, or anything else! You didn't argue enough.

Thankyou to everyone who has replied. To be honest i'm not looking for a way out of the national service, i'm coming to live here and feel i should pay my dues, six months is nothing compared to the two years most people do, and it will improve my greek speaking skills. Plus all my male relatives have done it, i'm quite happy to do it and learn from the experience.

Interesting. Of course I had to pay the phone deposit when I came over (being a furriner).

But I have been told more recently that I can actually insist on getting that deposit back now I've been here so long. Can't remember what the length of time they mentioned was but the person who told me said they cannot legally hang onto it?

B25 there was no date on that document. I posted it because it seemed to have been set out in a relatively simple to understand style.

I've tracked it to the CYPRUS FOR SOUTH AFRICA website though.

God said not to go into the military

Other 'refuseniks' refuse to serve in the West Bank and Gaza' here is a statement from them:

Cheers Gassy. Almost every refusenik was an officer or NCO. Brave of them to speak out. Better late than never.

You should have it returned after 3 years if you have not defaulted on your payments.

Go get it. Good luck.

Cheers B25! As I recall it was about £100 Cyp. And it is well over 3 yrs ago.
Getting some dosh BACK from Cyta will make me very happy!

Eric - you can sign their page from that site. These are not blokes refusing to fight - they are just refusing to fight outside the territorial line drawn in 1967 (probably not quite how they phrased it but sure you know what I mean).
