My understanding on this matter is that unless you apply for citizenship, you don't do natioanl service. Now we are in the EU you can come and go freely.

Upto the age of 26 you still need an exist visa though. A bit arse backwards, but this is Cyprus.

I plan to work here, and therefore need to get the national service out of the way first.

You don't need citizenship to work here. Where are you coming from.

The lack of citizenship does put you in some discriminatory positions in Cyprus though.

Depending on the job you wish to do, you may need citizenship to do it.

I'm from the UK, i guess yeah i need citizenship. I had an interview in december for a job, and they offered it to me providing i could prove i was ok to work here; ie didn't have to go to the army first. i went to the army office and they said i indeed do need to do national service before i could start work.

You are by virtue of your father being a Cypriot a Cypriot too. My son born in the UK , English mother is automatically a Cypriot national all that he has to do is apply for his Cypriot ID . You will need your fathers birth certificate , your mothers too and a copy of their passports . My daughter who now lives in Cyprus obtained the Cypriot ID with out any hassle.

You can avoid going to the army by getting a doctor to say you have psychological problems, that's what 20% of them do here!

As a EU citizen, you are free to work here. You don't need citizenship. Therefore without it, you are not liable for the national service is how I understand this. The army office just want another recruit.

Unless you are a doctor, lawyer, architect and maybe one or two other professions you don't need citizenship to do that job.

if you feel happier doing it, good luck and bravo.

Do you have exemptions for conscientious objectors or members of religious orders? And does Cypriot society attach any stigma to those who haven't been in uniform?
