Urgent!! Small bird of prey found.........

Postby tessintrnc » Sun Jan 18, 2009 2:12 pm

We just found a small hawk (I think) someone said it seems to have had its wings clipped (I know, I know - WHY)???

BUT, the main thing is, I haven't got a clue what to do with it. It is in a cardboard box now. Water I know it will need - but what about food? Should I put a small piece of raw chicken in with it? I have tried phoning vets and animal rescue - but they all seem closed till tomorrow. Thanks

Keep it indoors for tonight, a clothesbasket turned over makes a great temporary cage. Any fresh raw meat will do. Try contacting these guys…

Thanks GR, I not a "bird" person and haven't a clue what to do with it. It is so scared and making a horrible screeching noise if you go near it. I hope after a peaceful night it will be less stressed. Thanks again.

Warmth is the most important thing. If you can stomach it, try chewing some red meat before feeding, saliva will help the bird digest it better plus it will contain the moisture it needs if not drinking. Good luck and well done for taking care of it.

Hi Tess,

How is the hawk? Did he survive? Any luck with the animal rescue this morning?

Hi, the bird is still alive and I am still ringing around trying to find a sanctuary or a vet that is willing to take it. Thanks for the advice I will keep you posted.

Well done Tess for your efforts....

The wings being clipped is a sign that someone was trying to tame this bird. Its what they do until there is less of a chance for the bird to fly away...Is there much falconry in Cyprus???? :?

Hi Tess. You are doing a great job. Have you photographes it, so we might ID it. I am sure it will survive in your tender care. You are doing a good job.

Paphiakos

Postby Tim Drayton » Mon Jan 19, 2009 1:38 pm

There is an animal welfare charity in Paphos called Paphiakos. If you phone them, they may be able to give you some advice (I have found them quite useful in the past):

00 357 26935018

If you take the bird through to them, they will initially take it and look after it. I know that their vet, Dr Chris actually is a specialist in birds. However, they practise euthanasia after a certain while if they cannot find a home for the animals take in.
