EUROVISION SONG CONTEST

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

TWENTY-SEVEN year-old Zelis Senol will on tomorrow seek to become the first Turkish Cypriot to represent Cyprus at this year’s the Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow. She will be judged alongside nine Greek Cypriot artists, when she performs I’m Gonna Break Up With You, a song written and composed by Greek Cypriot songwriter Nicos Evangelou on CyBC 1 on Saturday night.

The winner will be decided by viewers who will vote for their choices by telephone SMS message.

Senol and the other nine contestants were shortlisted from a total of 74 entries.

“I really believe I’m going to win,” Senol told the Cyprus Mail yesterday. “The song is great, and my voice is on top form,” she added.

The singer, who is popular in the north, says she has been running a Facebook campaign aimed at boosting support from friends and well-wishers.

“In the last three to four days, 1,600 people have pledged their support,” she said. She added that many Turkish Cypriots had in the past few days crossed to the south to buy Cyta phone cards so that they would be able to vote for her.

Senol, who has been singing professionally for nine years, says her Eurovision dream began only ten days ago when Evangelou phoned to ask if she would be willing to sing his song.

“I was in shock and told him I’d have to think about it and call him back with my answer. I called him back two minutes later and said ‘definitely yes’.”

So it looks as though TCs will be able to vote for her.

Those who bother, yes. Good luck to her and may the BEST song win.

Suprise suprise she lost...good performance Zelish not many of them could have hit those high notes, we are proud of you.

The winning song, which won by a very large margin, was out of tune, notes were flat and out of key...but hey she must be a GC.

Had 1,200 TCs sat over their mobiles and each redialed Zelis number by 10 times, which was the maximum allowed, she would have also attained the 12,000 votes of the winner. After all, that is how the teenager won those 12,000 points, thanks also to facebook wiring and to the popularity of her brother who was a 1st runner up in the Greek x-factor a week ago.

Other than that, with the exception of the one song whose dancers were performing some acrobatic movements with their feet remaining solid on the ground, none of the songs did make an impression. Most of the singers were badly dressed and rather ...overweight.

You need to listen to Zelish again she is rarely out of tune I have heard her live and she very good, thought she was one of the best on the night but with 800.000 GC voters she didnt stand a chance. We are still real proud of her did real well considering the pressure she was under but the outcome was known from the outset.
