FURORE OVER MINISTER DEMETRIOU, AGAIN!

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Bananiot » Sun Jan 25, 2009 5:45 pm

It is sad, really sad, that out of all the fascists-nationalists Greek Cypriots that write in this forum, it was Kifeas who tried to save the day for EOKA B' and Grivas. In doing so he even saw "faults" in the disposition of Makarios and the crazy woman was quick to agree with Kifeas, despite admitting that Makarios is her hero.

To even aportion the blame equally to the Junta and EOKA B' constitutes a huge effort to absolve the Grivas-led fascist organisation of any blame. The fact of the matter is that the junta did carry out the coup but, and this is a big but, without the fascists of EOKA B' the junta could NEVER carry out the treacherous coup. I am arguing here that the EOKA fighters Pancyprian Association which now blatantly claims that EOKA B' was disbanded in January 1974 and therefore had nothing to do with the coup, is a sinister lie.

But, when people like Kifeas, come to the rescue of the Association at this moment of time when the forces of reaction are trying desparately to block the progressive minister's efforts to tell the truth to schoolchildren, I have no time and respect for them for I know that they are not interested in the truth but only in maintaining the lies they have been feeding us over the years.

I also remind everyone that Minister Demetriou said that terrorist organisations were set up in both communities. The known reactionaries jumped on him like vultures and tried to pass the message that illegal terrorist organisations were formed only in the Turkish Cypriot community which is the sole culprit for the 1963 events. To press this point home, OELMEK, the right wing Teachers's Union, sent an announcement to all schools to be read to the pupils. In this announcement OELMEK tells all the above lies and of course blames everything on the Turkish mutiny of 1963.

Makarios Droushiotis takes good care of them in today's "Politis". In the Turkish Cypriot community, he reminds us, one such terrorist organisation was set up and this was TMT. In the Greek Cypriot community, 15 such organisations were set up and he actually lists them by name:

MEAK
KEM
KSD
EMEAK
EKAS
NOEM
EMA
AEN
PES
OPEK
EPE
ASEN
EOK (also known as Akritas)
Sampsons brigades
Lyssarides brigades.

All the above organisation called for enosis and only enosis. None of them called for safeguarding the independence of Cyprus. Sadly that was Makarios's position too. In effect, Makarios and the terrorists considered the 1959-1960 agreements a mere stepping stone for enosis. In March 1963 Makarios writes to Greek Premier Papadndreou: "I never for one moment did believe that the agreements were a terminal institution".

With "war in 74..." you probably mean the illegal invasion of Turkey against a country 100 times smaller, at a time this smaller country was tormented by internal fighting and disorganization of its security forces and society.

If the GC leadership, Greek leadership, official and unofficial pressure groups of Hellenes(refers all Greek descendant people) had accepted TC community as a politically equal state partner of Cyprus most probably Hellenes and Turks would become the strongest allies in mediterrenan region. :D

You are so right insan.....

Further revelations:

1. Two years ago, the then Minister of Education, late Pefkios Georgiades, close associate of President Papadopoulos, also sent a circular to all schools to commemorate Makarios. In his circular, Pefkios said exactly the same as Minister Demetriou said in his circular last week. At the time, nobody made a fuss.

2. The circular sent by OELMEK, the teachers' union, to offset the one sent by Demetriou, states that the Turkish Cypriots on 20/12/1963, tried to occupy strategic points throughout Cyprus in order to facilitate partition. The United nations, it adds, intervened and thus the conflict was terminated. At that time, of course, there were no United Nations in Cyprus.

3. OELMEK's circular was proposed by supposedly democratic and progressive parties, like DIKO and EDEK!

Bananiot, I suggest you read more carefully what I write, and when you do so you will realize that you are not saying anything much different.

Secondly, I tried not to save anyone's day! It is a fact that the coup was not carried by Eoka B,’ and nearly all of its active members at the time heard of its news on the radio, like everybody else. As a matter of fact, it was planned for a later date, but then Ioannidis decided to surprise Makarios and cut him short of his plans to reduce the numbers of the NG, as he (Makarios) revealed to Gizikis 10 days earlier through his long letter. The decision for the coup was taken only 2-3 days before it took place, and Eoka B’ were neither informed nor counted for its execution. It is also a fact that Eoka B’ were severely battered and weakened by the Presidential police, during the last 6 months before the 15th of July 74, and were essentially rendered toothless after confiscating large quantities of their weaponry and arresting a considerable number of its leadership and members. This is also proven by the fact that hundreds of their members were actually released from the Nicosia Prisons, after the coupists (officers and army) took control of the situation.

It is true that without the existence of Eoka B’, Ioannidis’ Junta may not have considered, set aside planned and attempted a coup in Cyprus. At the same time, it is also true that without Junta’s active support, supply and funding, Eoka B’ may not have existed in Cyprus either. What is the point you are trying to make?

As for me committing the “sin” of criticizing Makarios deposition…., what the hell are you talking about? Since when, you in particular have become a merchant of Makarios policies or doings? Of course his speech at the UN on the 19th of July was deliberately exaggerated and misleading, unintentionally allowing for its content to be manipulated by the Turks at a later stage, and become a tool of their propaganda; regardless of the fact that they did not actually wait for his speech to be released (as some stupidly claim) so that they get “invited” to lunch their invasion on the 20th!

Of course his letter to Gizikis was a mistake, from the moment he was offered concrete evidence of what they were plotting and for the inevitable coup that was about to come; and instead, he should have kept his cards closed and tried to surprise the Junta by secretly arresting and deporting the top 5-10 officers that he knew were involved, rather than allowing the Junta to surprise him first by disclosing to them what he already knew!

They are clearly going to sack him.

So far the idiot has displayed a lot of arrogance and thankfully the guy will be isolated and banished into the political wilderness where he belongs. 8)

Got a link where we can verify your post. Not that I don't believe you, but you do have a habit of telling some pretty big lies or manipulating the context.

Send my regards to your son - a fellow Apoelistas extremist. 8) At least you have one member of the family with an IQ in excess of 80.

Let's leave forum member's family members out of it...

Agreed! But Bananiot can do the same and refrain from mentioning my parents who he alleges have instilled a neo nationalist anti Turkish upbringing.

Labelling certain persons as one thing or another is also not on.

Let us keep everything in context. This current round of debate started with the circular sent by the Minister of Education to be read at all schools. The majority of the teachers reacted strongly and accused Demetriou of not knowing history. They claimed, taking the cue from the Association of EOKA fighters, that EOKA B' had nothing to do with the coup, since it was disbanded after the death of Grivas in January 1973. This is a big lie and we all know that EOKA members suddenly sprung up in large groups manning key posts as soon as the coup started. In fact the sychronisation of EOKA B' with the events of July 15 1974 was quite remarkable, for a group that did not exist!

The following is the personal story of Makarios Drousiotis which shows how quickly EOKA B' ressurected itself despite being "rendered toothless", according to Kifeas.

I take it back Paphitis. My apologies. Your parents did not instill a neo nationalist anti Turkish upbringing into you.

Here you can find another interesting account of the role of Ioannides in the 1974 coup/

http://www.makarios.ws/cgibin/hweb?-A=1584&-V=english

I have singled out the last paragraph which answers a question recently asked by DT.

The thousands of pages of documents and depositions by the protagonists were classified top secret and locked in the office of the Chairman of the Greek Parliament, so as not to reinforce the pretext brought forth by Turkey for the invasion and occupation of Cyprus.

The Greek Coup and the Turkish Invasion

A coup d'état in Athens in November 1973 had made Brigadier General Dimitrios Ioannides leader of the junta. Rigidly anticommunist, Ioannides had served on Cyprus in the 1960s with the National Guard. His experiences convinced him that Makarios should be removed from office because of domestic leftist support and his visits to communist capitals. During the spring of 1974, Cypriot intelligence found evidence that EOKA B was planning a coup and was being supplied, controlled, and funded by the military government in Athens. EOKA B was banned, but its operations continued underground. Early in July, Makarios wrote to the president of Greece demanding that the remaining 650 Greek officers assigned to the National Guard be withdrawn. He also accused the junta of plotting against his life and against the government of Cyprus. Makarios sent his letter (which was released to the public) to the Greek president on July 2, 1974; the reply came thirteen days later, not in the form of a letter but in an order from Athens to the Cypriot National Guard to overthrow its commander in chief and take control of the island.

Makarios narrowly escaped death in the attack by the Greek-led National Guard. He fled the presidential palace and went to Paphos. A British helicopter took him the Sovereign Base Area at Akrotiri, from where he went to London. Several days later, Makarios addressed a meeting of the UN Security Council, where he was accepted as the legal president of the Republic of Cyprus.

In the meantime, the notorious EOKA terrorist Nicos Sampson was declared provisional president of the new government. It was obvious to Ankara that Athens was behind the coup, and major elements of the Turkish armed forces went on alert. Turkey had made similar moves in 1964 and 1967, but had not invaded. At the same time, Turkish prime minister Bülent Ecevit flew to London to elicit British aid in a joint effort in Cyprus, as called for in the 1959 Treaty of Guarantee, but the British were either unwilling or unprepared and declined to take action as a guarantor power. The United States took no action to bolster the Makarios government, but Joseph J. Sisco, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, went to London and the eastern Mediterranean to stave off the impending Turkish invasion and the war between Greece and Turkey that might follow. The Turks demanded removal of Nicos Sampson and the Greek officers from the National Guard and a binding guarantee of Cypriot independence. Sampson, of course, was expendable to the Athens regime, but Sisco could get an agreement only to reassign the 650 Greek officers.

The mere fact that there were 650 Greek Officers in charge of the CNG, seems to indicate that the Geek Junta did not require the assistance of anyone to undertake the Coup against Makarios. The Greek Junta was virtually in control of the CNG. EOKA B was well and truly decimated. These pro Union forces merely allied themselves with the Greek junta against Makarios and the Junta would have anticipated this, but it could not possibly be known as to how much this support could have influenced the Greek Junta to proceed with the coup. What is important in my opinion is that the Greek Junta had no ambitions for ENOSIS whatsoever, and instead chose to impose their own CIA puppet President.

Grivas was dead, and so it is unknown as to how he would have reacted had he been alive. He may not have necessarily supported the coup, as both he and Makarios were political allies for a long time, even though this alliance had soured somewhat. Grivas also spent time in Greece resisting and undermining the Greek Junta itself.
